HOW MANY SCAN OWNERS HAVE SEEN BLUE SHADOWING??????

xeno (Competent) posted this on Monday, 29th January 2001, 18:58

After having had 3 faulty scan sc2000`s -i have noticed one particular problem that seems to affect all sc2000`s.

After watching jaws region 2 on all 4 of the scans i have had, i have noticed alot of blue shadowing around fast moving images or when there is a dark scene following a bright scene and vica versa.

Every scan i have seen has this problem and although it seems only to happen on certain films it is a problem worth noting.

It is particularly bad on jaws but i have noticed it on the matrix,T2special edition, road trip and a couple of others.

The problem isnt just on region 1 discs it as i have seen the problem on region 2 discs and rce discs-(hollow man). But jaws is the worst one i have seen for this.

Anyone else noticed this ???????????

Yes, i can confirm that my set (updated with FW v2.08) has the same problem.

One thing i like to point out is that unlike the pixellation artefact, the `blue shadowing` artefact is only present during normal playback and will not be present when you freeze or step through those scenes.

Anyone out there knows the proper name for such artefact and what causes it?

Where exactly in The Matrix (R2) do you see this effect?

If you give the time into the movie I can check.

Also how do you connect to your TV and what options do you have enabled?

Yes that is what i have discovered also -the blue shadowing is only affected with playback. It is not a firmware issue too as i have seen it on firmware 1.04,1.92,1.93,2.06,and 2.08s.Before and after upgrades.

I,too, would like to find out what this is,what it is called and how to fix it.

The connection i use is direct to tv via scart and trying to configure the options does not make any difference at all -although it is harder to see through a modulated signal or composite.

On Chapter 15 of "The Matrix" R2 release, approximately 47:30 onwards. The `Blue Shadowing` artefact is present in most of the kung fu scenes in this chapter, varying in severity throughout.

My Scan dvd player is connected to the TV via a scart cable.

The TV set is a Panasonic nicam 21-inch model TX-21CK1.

Below are the various settings for the player i think that are relevant to the artefact:

In Video

OSD: English
TV ASPECT: 4:3 LB
TV TYPE: Multi
SCART: RGB
CAPTIONS: OFF

In Others

ANGLE MARK: ON
SCREEN SAVER: ON
FLT DISPLAY: MEDIUM
FLT AUDIO CH.: ON
FRONT KEY: UNLOCK

In the blue menu

AD7172: 00000003
CUSTOM ID: SCN TDVD-000.ROM
MAIN VER: 00000208 VFD1
NAV VER: 000009E5
SUB VER: 000000C5
PWD: 00000000
CLOCK: 00000438
RUN TIME: 00000079
N-SETUP: 00000007
S-SETUP: 00000001
RESULT: 00000002

i know that the Macrovision might be enabled in my player but as long as it doesn`t interfere with the playback i`m happy for i backup my DVD movies using my computer not VCR.

i like to urge all Scan player owners to check for themselves regarding the artefact if possible. i guess we would all like to know whether this artefact is only present in certain Scan players or not. Thank you.

I haven`t seen/noticed this effect and I watched The Matrix (R2) over the weekend. As per Gary W`s post, if you give a time during Matrix when you see this I will have a closer look.

Hmmm...a case of near-simultaneous posting methinks;-) I`ll take a look.

Guys

Never mind the matrix -just watch jaws and look at the faces of the actors as the blue shadowing seems worse on skin tones.

Like i said in the earlier post it dosent affect all films but jaws is bad on every scan i have seen.

OK, I`ve looked at The Matrix now (I don`t have Jaws, so I can`t help on that one), and I can see the occasional evidence of some blue `shadow`.

It really is very minimal though on my setup and I had to look at the scene several times to be sure I`d actually seen it. Maybe it`s just my poor eyesight:(

I made sure that my settings were the same as yours, montydeno and the only differences in my `blue` menu were:

ADV7172: 00000003
CUSTOM ID: SCN TDVD-000.ROM
MAIN VER: 00000208 VFD1 ¦ 00000204
NAV VER: 000009E5
SUB VER: 000000C5
PWD: 00000000
CLOCK: 00000438
RUN TIME: 00000079 ¦ 00000088
N-SETUP: 00000007 ¦ 00000004
S-SETUP: 00000001
RESULT: 00000002

My TV is a Philips 28PW9616 and connection was via the scart.
