Digital Cable through AV Receiver question...

julianf (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 4th September 2003, 23:00

Hi all - I`ve got a bad feeling that I already know the answer to this question but here goes...

I`ve got Telewest digital cable.
I`ve got an AV Home Cinema Receiver.
I`ve got a mono video player.
The digibox doesn`t have audio out.
The mono video player doesn`t have audio in OR out.
My TV only has phono sockets in a panel at the front.

How the hell do I watch cable in Pro Logic through the receiver ?????

I`m guessing the only way is to buy a nicam stereo video player and watch the cable on the video channel with video audio out going to the AV receiver...

thanks
julianf

Presumably your digitbox has two SCART out sockets, yes ?

If so, you need to buy a SCART to 2 phono cable so you can hook up to your receiver. You can then go from the other SCART to your video, and from your video to your TV. Okay, your recorded broadcasts won`t be in stereo, but at least your live TV from your digibox would be stereo :)

Phew! Thanks Clayts. I knew the wife wouldn`t have stood for leads coming out of the front of the TV...

I don`t record off the TV so I won`t encounter that little downside.

One more question though - if I use your set-up described above will the video still come on automatically when my kids put a tape in? They`re old enough to stick a video in and press play but not enough to start changing channels etc.

thanks
julianf

Yeah, it will do, assuming you have a SCART going from the VCR to the TV :)

You can also get scart cables that have audio left and right coming out, which is the way I`ve done it at home as my digi box also has no digi out or l/r out.

My Telewest Digital TV box has audio out on the back of it, it also has an ethernet conection and is marke "Telewest Broadband".

It sounds like you have an old box... it might be worth contacting Telewest and seeing if they will give you a new box.

The audio out drives my 5.1 system very well and unlike picture shape (which they get wrong from time to time) TW seem to get the 5.1 broadcasts spot on.

Far from it - these are the new generation Pace 4010 boxes that ntl, and presumably Telewest, shipped out to new customers in 2003 :)

You can tell if it`s a new box by whether there`s a USB connection on the rear.
