Please could somebody confirm exactly what make / model video processor is being used in the "new" machines, and has the pixellation problem gone completely or has it merely been improved ?

All the new ones(anything from oct26th)has the new mpeg card -you can check on the hidden menu if you have this or not.It should say adv )this indicates the mpeg card.
Although my replacement arrived today and it is one of the first machines with 1.03 firmware and the old mpeg card and the picture was rubbish.
If you get a new batch machine you shouldent experience any problems as my original machine had amazing picture quality.But ensure you get one from the jan25th batch.

I assume they will be shipped with the latest firmware 2.04s which fixes a lot of the `bugs` (low volume through SCART, CD Audio stopping / skipping, better mp3 support, long filenames, etc...) and is also Macrovision free (if you feel the need for VHS versions).
Although... they could even be shipped with the latest latest firmware 2.08, which nobody knows much about yet.
