SCAN SC2000 - Total picture breakup with Disney

Norman Voles (Competent) posted this on Monday, 15th January 2001, 11:33

I have just had my old SC2000 replaced with a spanking new one. I upgraded the firmware to 2.04s. I then `disabled` macrovision with SETUP - STEP - TITLE - PREV. Now the problems begin.

I just get complete picture breakup on Buena Vista Region 2 disks e.g. Lion King 2 and `The nightmare before Christmas`. I tried an MGM disk and that was OK (and Macrovision free). I tried a region 1 Disney (Fantasia) and that was OK.

It is as if Digital encoding was turned off with the macrovision. But why does it only affect Disney films? The kids are not going to like this!

Just in case it is something as simple as the Macrovision - how do I turn it on again? I tried repeating the above and trying SETUP - STEP - TITLE - NEXT - neither seems to have any effect?

In the SSW the top line says:

ADV7171 00000003 (should it not be 00000000 or 1)?

Please help

We have sent the mentioned disney disks to the manufacturer and are
waiting for a reply. The particular disk has been giving problems on other
players as well.Region 2 disney disks for some reason always tend to be problematic. The above problem has been happening on a few sc-2000s
only and not the whole batch. We are investigating.

They were allright before on the old player - so effectively I am worse off!. I there a way of switching macrovision back on to check if that is the issue?

There is a post on a DVD newsgroup about problems with these Disney discs - a lot have players have been affected.

Could you say which `DVD newsgroup` please.

Also any answers on why the SSW shows

00000003 rather than 00000001 ?!

RE: SCAN SC2000 - Total picture breakup on old Disney R2

I have now tried ALL my kid`s DVDs. The only ones I had trouble with were quite `early` region 2 releases by Disney. I found four...

The nightmare before Christmas - unfortunately my kids favourite
Lion King II
Aladdin and the king of thieves
Dumbo

so the situation is not as drastic as first thought, but the question remains "Why did they work OK on the old SCAN?"

I can confirm this problem with one of my Region-2 Disney DVD : Alice in Wonderland.
When I had the 1.92 firmware it was all right. But since I upgraded to 2.04s the picture is completely screwed !
I turned the macrovision off as well, I don`t know if it is linked because I didn`t try to read this DVD with the Macrovision and the 2.04s firmware.

Like Norman Voles I have the same line displayed in the blue screen we have to look to verify the firmware version :
ADV7171 00000003 (should it not be 00000000 or 1)?

I have also still the same hickup problem with Fantasia 2000 (Region 2). Between 00h58:10 and 00h58:20 there is often a freeze during maybe half a second.

No one seems to have the answer to the version number oddity.

Incidentally, I have found no more problems with films.

Sorry, I meant I have had no problems with any OTHER films apart from the ones mentioned whether they Disney or not (R1 or R2)
