Can anyone give any advice on what to look for in a region free player and good places to buy from? Any particular brands to stay away from? I`m in the U.S.

Nerd Out forums at http://www.nerd-out.com for user feedback on all budget decks in US/Canada
My own http://www.area450.com is also good for feedback on Sampo players :-)

Personal recommendation, if you can still find one, Sampo DVE612(N) - all important extra (N) at the end - http://www.area450.com/thesampozone/quickguide/dve612n.htm

one of the things i have read about region frees are that some will stretch the picture of a widescreen PAL formatted dvd on a NTSC tv..i found a dealer selling a modified toshiba among other brands that they claimed would not do this...is there truth to this in general with any dvd player?

There is no trruth in that - the Sampo DVE612(N) does the conversion correctly, as does the Malata N996, I think.
