I would go for the Panasonic or Panasonic clone DVD-Ram, DVD-R, DVD-RW. You have the best of all worlds. Each Ram disc is equal to having a 4.7 removableHard drive. All good DVD players will playb RAM discs shortly, just as 2 years ago, almost nothing played SVCDs VCDs or MP3s, now allmost everything does. In the meantime record onto DVD-R or RW & play them on any DVD player.

For `backing up` (cough!) DVD movies, you might want to look at the following sites:

http://www.dvdrhelp.com
http://www.doom9.org

which cover the topic in great depth. For what it`s worth, DVD Decrypter and DVD2One seem to be a very effective combination for dual-layer DVD movies. For single-layer films, DVD Decrypter on its own does the trick.
