Page 1 of DVD - A Playback problems.

I have recently purchased a Pioneer 656 A DVD player, of which I am most impressed. The problem I have however, may or may not be to do with the player itself. I have set the player and processor to play DVD A discs and with my first disc Fleetwood Mac`s Rumours, I have had no problem, it is superb. The problem comes when the second disc I bought, Bucky Pizzarelli `Swing Live`. The disc should play straight away, which it does and the counter reading clicks over, on pressing the audio button, the onscreen menu states that the correct section of the disc is playing, ie the DVD A track. However, there is no sound, popping Fleetwood Mac back in it plays without fault.
The disc will play the Dolby 5.1 mix and Stereo mix, ie in the DVD Video section of the disc. My player is connected to a Yamaha DSPE 800E proccessor and NAD C340 amp.
Has anybody got any suggestions on what may be wrong, it could be a faulty disc, faulty player (unlikley) or the proccessor not... well proccessing correctly. Any info would be very helpful.

I have the same player and have no issues with it - though I have not tried the same disc. It plays everything I have thrown at it.

Initial guess would be that it is a disc problem - try popping down to a Hifi store and trying it on a diffrent machine.

I assume you are connected via the 5.1 outs as you have said it plays other DVD-A disc`s.

Yes I have connected it up correctly. I am begining to think it could be the disc. Strange though, the producers have a very good name in the U.S.
Chesky Records. If you get chance and you like Jazz, check this disc out it is superb, even in normal 5.1!

If you happen to like Bjork (or if you really haven`t given her a real try - she really isn`t all screeches) I would really reccomend Vespertine DVD-A it is a fine example of how to mix an album into 5.1

Starting to really like the surround music thing, be it DVD-A, DVD-V or SACD.

Yeah, I`m just getting into the music myself. It takes a little time after all these years of Stereo and Mono! I will post a message when I reach a solution on my disc. I am sending it back to Futureent and see what happens.

Have you gone into the player menu and set the playback to DVD AUDIO and not DVD VIDEO on the DVD AUDIO options..If the disc has DVDA on it and you have set the player correctly it should automatically miss the Dolby Digital section out.I have had DVD for 5 and a half years,but still found the initial set up of this player quite tricky with all the options.I set it up and was mystified why I could not get the DD section to play,but it depends on the settings you have made.

Yeah, I`ve done all that but still no luck. I have since sent the disc back to futureent.com and see what they come up with. Not much probably!

DVD-A and SACD suck!!

Have you connected your DVD player to your amp via RCA`s or just via Digital (Coax or Optic) The reason I ask is TRUE DVD-A is processed in ANALOGUE ONLY (RCA`s). The Fleetwood Mac can play in both Analogue & Digital, but in Digital mode your really getting a jumped up CD version of the track, where as in Analogue you will hear the true meaning of DVD-A (different instruments in different speakers etc...). It is possible that your other DVD-A disc is DVD-A only, therefore if you are playing it through Digital connections you wont get any sound, try connecting the RCA`s & select Analogue on your Amp, you may find that this will resolve your problems.
