Is Acoustic Solutions Surround package worth £99?????

It`s in the title really

I`m going from Newcastle to Somerset to visit some friends in a couple of weeks to celebrate my best mates birthday. I was looking for a cool gift with no more than £100 to spend when I spotted an Acoustic Solutions DX333 decoder/sub/sat package at currys for £99.

I`ve been trying to get my mate into surround sound for ages but moneys tight as he starts up a new business. It also means that when I go to visit and we watch a movie I won`t feel frustrated at only hearing a stereo track.

It looks good but it only decodes DD 5.1 and the pains at currys can`t be bothered to set it up so I can hear it. I``ve checked the manual out at

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of the kit and whether anyone felt that not having DTS was a real disadvantage at the price. Other suggestions would be greatfully received.

Cheers

At this price and when your mate is just stepping in to surround sound, the lack of DTS is probably going to go un-noticed. However, although I have never heard the system in action, for £99, I really believe you get what you pay for. If it is just to wet his apetite then it might be OK, but if you want to be serious about it, I would have my reservations. I certainly wouldn`t buy it without hearing it in action, and seen as they`re all out in Currys anyway I think it`s so tight arsed of them you should go elsewhere. Argos sell the system too so ring them and see if they`ll give you a demo.

I went to another currys store and they happily demo`d the system for me. It`s not perfect (no DTS) but it is pretty good looking and was surprisingly loud. It sucked a little with all but classical music but for a movie only solution I think its pretty good. When I consider that Richersounds has a Sony DAVS300 for £199 it doesn`t look such a bargain but for someone with a DVD player already and a medium sized room you could do a lot worse. I`m going to hook it up to my bedroom system tomorrow night. I`ll post the results then.

I have bad experience with this brand. I bought a pair of their AV20 speakers a while ago for my sister, and they sounded absolute crap, and the tweeters blew as soon as we turned the system on (even with volume down!!)

Their DVD decks are also pretty nasty, too!!

I have got this speaker set up and have been very impressed with it,if you are on a budget it does make the dvd experience that much better. Here is a link for some more reviews. http://www.reviewcentre.com/products151.html
