set top box

Rickws (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 2nd March 2003, 11:24

Can anyone recommend a good set top box for freeview stuff?
They all seem to be around £100 so does anyone know of anywhere cheap?
I`d like one with a remote control to add to my collection and if possible audio out point so I can wire it up to my amp.

Cheers

Rick

I have a thomson DTI1000, very good box has remote control (controls TV and DVD Player too), it has 2 scarts, mains in, rf in, rf loop and audio out!

VERY GOOD!

The only ones I`ve used are the Pace DVTA and Panasonic TUCT20. I can`t fault either for picture quality or reliability - they both seem to work very well. Here`s a comparison:

Pace

Pros: Small size, nicely designed remote, fast navigation of menus
Cons: Poor connectivity (only one hard-wired SCART, no RF output or loop-through)

Panasonic

Pros: Good connectivity (SCART, audio out, RF out and loop-through)
Cons: A bit cheap looking; remote is designed for dwarves

The Panasonic *seems* slightly more tolerant of poor reception than the Pace, so it might be a better bet if you live in a "fringe" reception area or intend to use an indoor aerial with it.
