Subwoofer Help Needed!

gingerone (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 25th February 2003, 09:28

I`m getting an intermittent fault with my sub, now and again it just cuts out altogether. When this happens I have tried unpugging and re-plugging to no avail but if I pull out the sub cable and replug it, then it works for a while.
I have tried using a standard phono lead and although the sound quality was terrible the problem stopped.
Could it be a faulty lead?
p.s. I have an REL Quake and a pioneer vsx-c300 receiver. And I am using the cable that came with the sub.(problem happens on ntl and dvd)
Thanks.

Sounds like it to me, as two different sources show the effect, and a different lead fixes the problem.

Of course, it could be that the sub is incompatible with your system, and you need to get it out of your house as quickly as possible. I can be round to remove it from the premises within 12 hours - now that`s good service. Tempted?

:o))

Thanks for the offer Richard, although as the the REL looks quite nice I`ll hang on to it.
I`ve got an old sofa that you could move for me though!

Nahhh, whack a couple of those bass shakers under it and FEEL the force - when it collapses you can gt rid of it more easily....

But seriously folks...
Can you open the phono plugs on the suspect cable to have a look for a dodgy connection, or are they moulded ones?

They are moulded plugs. I had`nt noticed a problem before but I have changed the placement of my amp and I think I have pushed the lead into an iffy angle.
Any suggestions for a decent sub cable for not a lot of cash?
And is there much difference between a digital coaxial cable and a subwoofer cable?

I use IXOS 1081. Its cheap from Hi-fi Junkies and sounds fine for cinema effects. I`m not sure the neighbours would apreciate something that went even lower than this!

Did you notice an improvement over the original cable?

Yes!!!

But MJ Acoustics supplied the cheapest crappiest lead you could imagine with my Pro 100.

I was more interested in stereo, so most of my budget went on the lead for that.
