Techtronics` response on LG 3350E Macrovision query

IT Troll (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 4th January 2001, 10:22

I emailed Techtronics regarding their new Macrovision mod for the 3350E and if it could be performed on players purchased last year. I even mentioned Jimbo`s "pin snipping" rumor. They responded,

"Macrovision disable on this model involves a new microprocessor. I`m afraid we are not able to offer this as DIY as yet, but we do have plans to sometime in the future."

If they are to be believed then this doesn`t bode well for a cheap Macro hack.

:-(

Betchya its a "pic chip"
Thats another avenue I`ve been checking out as an older LG disables macro that way.

(8 pin chip with 4 wires connected..similar to those used for chipping Playstations)

The revelation of the macrovision disable is raising getting me all sweaty of palms it is the missing piece of the puzzle.
I can not believe that the hack will be that hard to apply, after all it is only a £20 mark-up at Techtronics. If it was really tricky to do they would surely be asking for more, look at the Sony hacks which are tricky hardware mods as an example. Methinks they are trying it on a little.

Maybe, but a pic chip is only about £2 for low quantity purchases..it`s the programming that takes the time and hassle..if they`re moving them in bulk at £18 a time mark up, then that aint so bad!!

Anyways..Troll, email me..I might be getting a 3350 SERVICE MANUAL!!!!!

Jimbo - let me know which chip is used for the macrovision -- and i`ll try and get the data sheet since most of these chips can be disabled by shorting a pin to ground .

I think you`ll find most of the chips are macro disabled by writing to them with a series of bytes (as most/all have some sort of serial comms to them for set up of colourburst frequency etc.) and not by pulling any specific line to ground. (At least since the early Pioneer days).

Alternatively it will be a firmware patch.

My money would be on it being the same uProcessor they tried using for the Enterprise mod (as there are a lot of people busting Pics) and an add on chip.

Question,

If the thread re constants is correct (Pi, e, etc) and techtronics have disabled macrovision using such a code, then the following could happen :-

Punter purchases techtronics LG with macrovision disabled. Punter enters 271828 = e = factory settings. Punter loses macrovision disable. Unhappy punter. Agree ?
