What type of player to buy

kuppaz (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 3rd January 2001, 17:31

Hello all , I`m currently setting up a cinema sound system .
The amp i have is a dsp a5 yamaha the biggest problem i`m having is knowing what player to buy as the dsp a5 has an inbuilt dts & dd 5.1 decoder would connecting the dvd player directly using coax digital input be better than using the onboard decodersof the players and using the individual inputs ?
the short list i have drawn up is either the tosh SD100E or the pioneer DV 535 ( if direct connection is best ) or the tosh sd 200e or the pioneer dv 636 ( if onboard decoders is best) i intend to buy a multiregion player

My guess is the direct digital input is best but it is only a guess

Many thanks Matt

You`re totally correct - it is always better to use the amplifier`s decoder, rather than the on-board decoder on a DVD player.

The coaxial digital option is my preferred option too (you can pick up relatively cheap interconnects from Richer Sounds).

The A5 sounds absolutely FANTASTIC with DVD - even tho` I don`t normally advocate such a thing, definitely experiment with the DSPs on it. Armageddon and Heat coupled with DGTL SPECTACLE DSP will absolutely rock your living room !!!
