Scan SC-440LSI beware!

MurrayE (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 22nd January 2003, 13:23

I got a scan 440LSI for Christmas from my fiancee... I was, naturally, delighted, never having ventured into the DVD arena before. Getting star-wars I & II at the same time was also a real bonus.

It didn`t work. It played audio CDs but would not play DVDs.

We returned it to scan on December 6th having been promised that it would take 10 days at most and they`d refund the postage charge. They refused to do a turn-around (pick up the faulty one at the same time as delivering a replacement)

It arrived back on the 21st (5 days late), we have not been reimbursed for the carriage for the faulty unit, no apology for the delay.

On arrival, the unit had the DVD drawer partially hanging out, but we eventually managed to get it going. The manual was for the old SL model, which didn`t help.

It plays DVDs (result!), it plays audio and MP3 CDs (nice one), but now it hangs from time to time (3 times last night) and requires to be disconnected from the mains for it to be reset. (anyone know of firmware upgrades? Nothing on the Ellion website...)

I used to be a software engineer. I`ve been a quality manager. I`ve been involved in the development and manufacture of consumer audio devices. And frankly, I`m not impressed so far.

Every time a new scan player comes out the posts begin to pile up! Beware indeed!

My personal experiences with Scan`s customer "service" have been nothing short of terrible.

If anyone reading is thinking of purchasing something from Scan then I`d recommend you don`t.

While the Scan DVD players etc may be great when they work (I myself bought a SC-2000 model as my own first contact with Scan and it`s still going, thank god) heaven help you if anything goes wrong with any of your purchases.

You might consider yourself fortunate that you`ve asked your question in these forums as nelley`s been a regular for years. But I`ve still seen times where it`s still gone wrong even after nelley`s stepped in.

Of course, myself and all the other people who`ve recieved next to no support from Scan in the past were "unlucky". Maybe the service is a lot better now. I`d hazard a guess from your post that things are NOT better.

Ever since my own experiences, I feel I owe it to the online community to let others know this as it could end up saving you weeks or months of hassle with zero results

Anyway, good luck.

Congratulations to you then!

Glad to see you defending the poor service and ... oh wait, you`re not. No more talk about the new service centre that was being built all that time ago? I can see from the poor chap above that it`s made no difference. Still using Shi...sorry, City Link at a guess too. What a great pair!

Scan`s reputation still precedes it. I`m still seeing postings on other forums of people saying "What do you think of this..." and linking to items on your site, only for 3 or 4 people (not necessarily me!) to dive straight in and tell them to get it anywhere else but Scan. It only takes one poorly serviced individual to come onto a popular forums with troubles like these to re-inforce this opinion, even among the less informed people on the net.

Latest, as of last night, is that the machine now will not come ouf of standby properly at all. The power light changes from red to green, but that`s it - it`s then dead.

Nilesh - there was nothing stacked on the machine - everything was perfectly cool.

Glad to see there`s a new batch in on Monday. Just some questions:
(a) Will SCAN pay for return this time?
(b) Will SCAN test the unit extensively this time?
(c) It looked to me like the unit had been out of the box as few of the cable ties were on properly and the manual was the wrong one. On top of that, the unit was older than my original one. Is it possible that I was sent a old/repaired unit to keep me quiet?
And one last comment - if this one doesn`t work my fiancee will be demanding her money back and we`ll go elsewhere.

gingerone - to be fair these posts are piling up on one failure... hardly representative. Unless, of course, you know of another forum with hardware reviews on this machine?

wpkenny - thanks for the feedback. Once is bad luck, twice is suspicious, I can`t accept a third failure... we`ll see.

Wish me luck!!

All I can say is that Derek and Nilesh from Scan have both listened and responded in a positive manner, more than can be said for some other retailers.

I await the new machine with baited breath and will be testing it extensively over the coming week(s).

IF for some reason I get a third failure, I`d be interested to know the opinions of the group on the best alternatives at a similar price (important factors are: good quality playback, multi-region, support for MP3, VCD, SVCD and customer support!) I guess I should go read throught the hardware reviews first!
