mission m70s and marantz 5200/5300??????????

rolly (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 9th January 2003, 00:27

Can any of you kind folks help me with the following....

I currently own 28 inch Philips widescreen tv and a LG 3350e dvd player and am looking to get a nice descrete 5.1 surround sound cinema setup for a small/medium sized room.

I`m pretty much decided on a Marantz 5200 or 5300 reciever but is it worth splashing the extra dosh on the updated 5300 or is there not alot of difference?

Also for the speaker package I quite fancy the mission M70 cinema set for £330 (has anyone heard or own this and can give a decent review??) but i`m not sure if the sub is up to much and whether to,

a) go the easy route and buy the complete speaker package or

b) just buy the M70 front pair and centre speaker and use my existing kenwood speakers as rears on a temporary basis until I can save up a little more cash and then swap the fronts to rears and get maybe a slightly weightier more expensive front pair and a higher quality sub like the REL Q150 or the Quake.

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated,

thanks in advance,

R

Right,

Your choice of reciever is as sound as a pound - don`t worry about the politics of whether you`ll need the extra features on the 5300, just get one! Superb amp indeed.

Speakers? The baby Mish set are a fine, fine choice, and indeed would sound fab on the end of the Marry. Now, even though some may doubt the sub, it`s actually very good for what it`s worth. Not the deepest, but what`s there is tight and well judged and never gets caught out. What i would suggest is buying the m70i fronts, an M7C2 centre, some m7ds rears and then buy a Velodyne sub from here ;http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41254

Velodyne?? Yes, Velodyne. Though some will kick my ass here for saying it, the Rel subs you mention just sound pants next to the Velodyne CHT-10. For £325, (delivered to your door inclusive of this too), you get possibly the finest `budget` sub on the planet, (blimey, not even budget does this thing justice). I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed in the slightest.

You could buy the entire m70 cinema set if you wanted, then add the Velodyne later. The Missions sound superb together as a package - don`t be tempted to cost cut and use the Kenny speakers on the rears, they`ll sound completely outclassed against the Missions. Go on, treat yourself!

if you are on a budget, the marantz 4200 is amazing as well, and is only £200 instore at richer sounds. i would definetly reccomend it.

only differences i can remember between 4200 and 5series is the addition of 6.1 and 7.1. im sure there are more, but they werent of any use to me.

hope this is helpful

Thanks guys,

I did look at the 4200 but I think I`ll future proof myself a bit more and go for the higher quality 5300 if Westy recommends it.

As for the speakers I was looking for something that didn`t stick out too much and thought the m7c1 would sit nicely on my black widescreen whereas the recommended M7c2 looks alot more chunkier. Hopefully there`s not too much difference in the sound quality??

Also I know everyone recommends the m7ds but I just can`t see them fitting in with my lounge, so its either back to buying the package and using the m70s as rears or buy another descreter rear speaker that would sound good with the missions if someone can recommend a suitable choice.

Oh and do you have the dimensions of that Velodyne sub Westy, I take it its just a plain black jobby?

don`t worry about the velodyne dimensions Westy I got them off the AV forum, and that is one big old boy, I think my girlfriend would kill me if I wheeled that beast in.

damm how do you fit all that stuff in your lounge!

In my lounge? It`s all in the garden mate - ran out of space ages ago...:-)

Seriously, i have to be quite minimalist furniture wise as my Acoustic Energy Evo 3`s are very tall and the Velodyne is tucked nicely next to the tv stand. My amp, dvd, games consoles,cd player and turntable all sit neatly on my `quipy rack.

It`s great when things get really loud - my right speaker is right next to the curtains, and when a BIIIG bass moment occurs the curtain flaps around like crazy from the rear port of the speaker.

I`ve also had to start moving the fish bowl from the kitchen work surface if i`m planning a big movie moment as the damn thing keeps moving in bass heavy moments! The power of Velodyne should never be underestimated ;-)
