Setup Advice

Cooper_S (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 10th December 2002, 19:59

Hello.

First post here so apologies if I am covering old ground. I did a search but couldn`t find the answer to my questions.

I have a Yamaha DSP E800 with Mission 700`s as fronts, 70`s as rears and a 70c1 as my centre speaker.

I have recently purchased a subwoofer (Yamaha YST320) and I need some advice on setting up the centre and rears.

I currently have both my rears and centre set to Large. Should this be set to small? And why?

I also have the Bass Out set to Both should this be set to SW?

Also as my fronts aren`t particularly big should they also be set to small?

Finally, does anyone know where I can get a wall bracket for a centre speaker as I am sick of it sitting on top of my TV?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Does nobody know whether to set the rear speakers to small?

Please tell me how you all have your rears setup.

There must be someone else out there with a Yamaha DSP E800?

Right, the DSP800 is very similar to other av amps, except (as you know) that instead of amplification for the front two channels, it passes the decoded signal to your main hifi for amplification. So the rules are basically the same.

Setting a speaker to "small" means that lower frequencies are not sent to that speaker - I think the cutoff is around 80-90Hz. Any lower level frequency information for the affected channels are redirected to the Sub. If you don`t have a sub, then it would be sent to the front channels, which must be set to large if no sub is present. As low frequency sound is not "directional", this does not confuse the ear. The rear channels don`t usually have too much low frequency stuff to do anyway.

So in your case, setting the centre and rears to large means that the full range of each channels signal is sent to the speaker in question. Looking in the manuals for your speakers will tell you what frequency response each is capable of - I`ve just checked the manual for my M7x series, and - for example - the M7C1`s lowest quoted frequency is 75Hz, so it should really be set to small. If my amp has it set to large, and is sending all the info to that speaker, then anything under 75Hz or so will be lost. Does that make sense? Check your manuals, or look on the web - your M70s will certainly have a lower cutoff frequency, but you may want to experiment with then set to small too.

Now, "Bass Out". With that set to "both", you are sending the low frequency info from any channels set to SMALL, plus the dedicated sub info (the ".1") to both the sub AND the front speakers. Set it to MAIN, and it will go to front speakers only (as long as they`re set to "large", of course), and if it`s set to SUB, then the low frequency stuff goes only to the sub. If you have any speakers set to Large, then they will continue to get the full signal.
would have thought that the sub is more than up to the job of handling the bass, so you might like to try it set to SUB.

You need to decide by listening what you prefer, but my initial suggestion would be as follows:
REARS: small
CENTRE: small
FRONTS: large
BASS OUT: sub

This will give you a chance to get the sub set up correctly, which is an art in itself. For more advice, have a look at Westy`s comprehensive article on setting a system up here: http://www.area450.com/homecinema/odeon.htm

This is all going to depend on room layout, speaker location etc, so you`ll have to play.
