best bargain player

db1 (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 28th November 2002, 17:00

I`m looking to buy a cheap second player for my daughters bedroom any thoughts on which one?
So far I`ve got it down to the
schneider 857 @ £90 with 3 year guarantee or
Alba 108 @ £70 (favourite so far!!)
I`d really appreciate some help here what it plays isn`t as important as how it plays.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me

Have you tried empiredirect.co.uk?

they have the top brands at the best prices so you do not have to resort to an alba - or is that I am a brand snob

they have a Phillips one for under 100 and if its for your daughters room the Sony Picot at £120 looks funky & trendy

Definetely the Cyberhome 402. I`ve just bought one for the kids room and it`s great pic and sound quality.

It costs £80 from WH Smith with a 2 year guarantee and can be converted to multiregion in 90 seconds using the hack available on this site. It is supplied with a scart cable, video audio cables and remote control (with batteries!).

So £80 player that also plays VCD, CD-R,CD-RW and MP3? What more could you want?

How about a £70 player that can do all of the above, plus SVCD? ;-)

The player in question is the Alba 114, available from some Argos stores (you`ll need to order the 108, and ask at the till if they can bring you the 114). Excellent picture quality, good sound quality, plays just about everything you throw at it. And, this being Argos, if you don`t like it, you can easily take it back.

Mike

P.S. Skye1 - if you "diss" Alba products without having used them, then of course you`re a brand snob! ;-) Having said that, the Picot does look very nice.

Keep a look out at your local WH Smith`s for the 10% off nights they run this time of year. I picked up a 402 last week at one of these for £72.

I`ve got the old Alba 108 and it`s good (the only problem is no standby button!). I went in to get another as a present and it was the 108Xi which is NOT multi region.

I ended up taking it back and got the Pacific 1002 from Asda - hacked no probs and comes with the free 3 year warranty!!!

:o)

Oops forgot to say the Pacific is £70

Cyberhome..
Alba...
Naiko...
Dansai...
Pacific...
Schneider...
What it is about DVD players that make folk consider manufacturers they wouldn`t normally give house room to ??
I`m always getting people coming up to me on a Monday morning saying "I saw a ( insert above ) for £50 in Lidl "
I always reply the same way " would you buy a washing machine with that name ". Usually it`s no.
I`m not having a go. I`m just pointing out that people seem to think that a DVD players is a DVD player is a DVD player...Much more so than any other kind of electrical item I`ve come across. It`s weird !
