SONY DAVS 550 MR

Davidc (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 9th September 2002, 11:26

I have recently purchased the above and have found a couple of issues on some discs relating to subtitles.

On "Unbreakable" Region 2 I get forced French subtitles which I can not switch off.

On "Oh Brother Where art though" Region 2 I get English hard og hearing captions which I can switch off but they switch themselves back on at the layer break.

Any suggestions.

I had a simillar problem, I could not turn the subtitles off permanently.
I found I had to switch them off for each new inserted disk, then when the layer changed they re-appeared.
I have sent my player back to the supplier and asked for my money back as I believe its a problem with this model as I have heard simillar stories on other forums.
Doesnt help you with your problem, but I thought I would share some info.

Does anybody know if Sony have a software fix for this or are they saying that they are not aware of the problem (as usual)!

Has anybody seen any postings ?

I am trying to get this resolved by Sony but could do with a bit more info. On which other forums have you seen this issue raised. And did the problem exist on all discs or just one or two.

Thanks

DC

I also have this problem and for an example the film AI turns the subtitles on by default. I then turn them off but at the layer change point which is where it focusses on a mans face during the flesh fair and the presenter is talking to the audience with our heroes tied in the centre it turns them back on again.
Other DVD`s where I have seen this with are Moster Inc, Starship Troopers, and Xmen. I havn`t had it long but I guess it will do it with any disk as the only disk so far it hasn`t done it with does not contain subtitles.

I have raised it with the dealer that sold me it but he has not had any joy from Sony so far.
Apart from this it is a nice looking bit of kit but it will have to go back if this problem is not resolved.
