philips 28pw9617 dolby digital 5.1 decoding

Andrew Briggs (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 4th September 2002, 09:01

I`ve just bought a philips 28pw9617 pixel plus television that has an in-built dolby digital 5.1 decoder.

I`m looking at buying a pioneer dvd player (probably the DVD656A) that also does the decoding.

As I`m new to this stuff, will the above items work together and if so where does the decoding happen in reality. I`d imagine that the dvd player will decode and send a decoded signal to the TV which SHOULD realise that the signal has already been decoded.

Can someone shed some light on this ?

Thanks

Andy

Yes, they will work fine together. No, in this configuration the decoder in the player is redundant, and you could buy a player without it if you only want to play DVD video disks. You connect the DVD player`s digital co-ax output to the digital audio input on the TV, associated with AV1, using a single phono to phono cable. The TV then does the decoding. If you later get an AV amplifier or receiver you connect the same output (or the optical one) to a digital input on that.

Thanks for the reply. That`s exactly what I needed to know. I`m in two minds whether to buy a cheaper DVD player e.g. the pioneer 350S or not. It`s just that I`d like to have a one unit box for DVD`s and CD`s (the SACD does not interest me too much).

I just bought a scan 2500. This player allows you to decode and playback the DTS sound track through a dolby 5.1 chn system. The sound quality is far superior. Try this you wont be dissapointed.

But in this case what use would a player with a DTS decoder be? The TV only accepts analogue stereo or digital input that is Dolby encoded (or PCM or MPEG), and there is no mention of any other sound package, so the decoded DTS would have nowhere to go!

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately my wife doesn`t like the look of it. The cosmetic appearance is her number one consideration.
