i`m after a budget dvd player, and am considering one of the 3 above. But which is best, and are they hackable? Also, is the pioneer DV-454 worth the extra money? any help is appreciated

I don`t know about the Pioneers I`m afraid but I`ve just picked up a Multi-Region Tosh SD220e from Richersounds for £134.99!!!! as the store honoured the web price (also advertised in what hi-fi). It`s my third player and I must say that all of the reviews I have seen are right, the picture is great, it`s well built and the menu`s / options are well thought out. It`s played all of my region 1 disc`s so far (including RCE Memento0 and is a definite improvement over my previous players (Eclipse DVD-595 and Pioneer DVD ROM). If you can get the DV-350 or DV-454 at the same price then check them all out. If not, get yourself along to Richersounds and enjoy.

My shortlist has the Tosh and the two Pioneer models you mention on it too (plus a couple of Philips models, the Q40 and DVD723, which are hear are pretty good. My new TV will be a Philips set too and I quite like the idea of it matching the DVD). Tosh player sounds a good deal at Richer Sounds but I don`t mind paying £30/£40 if the Pioneer of Philips models are a bit better quality.. Can anyone comment on this?

I gather with the Pioneers, all the 454 has over the 350 is the fact that comes with Coax and Optical Digital outs (Coax only on the 350, which is good enough for me). Do any of these players (or others in the price range) have anything much sexier in the way of technology (ie progressive scan or anything)??

Not in this price range nope - The cheapest progressive scan DVD player is a Debenhams exclusive £199 player ( ive forgot the name ) but it gets rave reviews in What Hifi etc - The styling not to everyones taste though.

When I purchased my player from Richer Sounds they said that the web price did not include the £9.99 delivery charge therefore I ended up paying £144.98 - was I conned????
