i`m currently looking for a cheap surround speaker package for a bedroom, i`ve been into Richer sounds and saw a LimitHT5.1 for only £149.95 does anyone know is this is any good, if not any other similar priced packages.

any help would be much appreciated,

Stuart.

Hi Stuart,

Richer Sounds is a great place to pick up a bargain. I suggest you call them to arrange a demo of the Limit package and also to try the Eltax Cinema 5.1 system. Only you can tell whether the speakers will sound good or not. Buying speakers without listening to them first is not a good idea.

Another alternative, also from Richers, would be to try out a system made up of Kef Cresta1`s with a Kef Cresta Centre speaker, well under your budget at £150. These are currently being sold off at half their normal price but may be in short supply. This system should be leagues ahead of the other two but, as always, try before you buy....

Hope this helps.

Am I right in thinking you`re looking at something (like the Limit) you can run straight from a DVD player with on board decoder, rather than a set of speakers to run from an amplifier/reciever?
If so, you might want to look at the Novatech packages - I think they do one at £100 (HT210?) and one for a bit more. They come with remote, can take inputs from other sources, etc. I`m sure a couple of people have them on the forum, so have a search around. Can`t say how they`ll compare with the Limit - to be honest for a bedroom I`d imagine fitting it in may be at least as big a concern as sound quality (well, within reason....)

hmmm... there I was assuming you already had an AV amp or receiver. Ok, well, getting decent sound is going to be a lot tougher and my experience of the really cheap "all-in-one" packages is somewhat limited - I`m usually out the door after a few seconds...

One "all-in-one" package that has impressed me is the Videologic Digitheatre. It`s by far the best I`ve come across of it`s type and it looks pretty neat too. Trouble is it`s way over your budget but you may find it discounted somewhere and I`m sure I`ve seen packages up on eBay at prices that would fit your budget. Another great package that you might find heavily discounted is the JBL ESC333. Either of these will provide a quality of sound approaching that of an entry level home cinema separates system.

Otherwise, check out the Novatech mentioned above or one of the Digitron systems but do try to have a listen to them before you lay down your cash.

I agree that a discreet package is desirable but as it`s going to be in the bedroom I`d rate the sound as a very high priority. Many of the very cheap systems can be rather weedy, sounding thin and screechy to the point of distraction - definitely NOT what you want. Smooth and strong always does it....

Good luck!
