Encore 2.0A firmware update - WARNING

clayts (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 28th November 2000, 21:38

For those that are intending to use the 2.0A firmware version please may I offer this word of warning - follow these instructions to the letter otherwise you will end up with a locked up player. I fell foul of the same update but, somehow, managed to get away with it. Others have not been so lucky (never had so many e-mails!!! - sorry, Graham)

"STEP 1: Switch on your telly and the 450 and press OPEN on the player

STEP 2: Insert firmware version 2.0 CD and press CLOSE

STEP 3: Press PLAY

STEP 4: In the top left of the screen it will say "LOADING" then "SAMPODVD.ROM" - the screen should flash pink. Don`t be surprised if the screen looks very fuzzy - this will clear ! This bit takes about 10 seconds.

STEP 5: In the top left of the screen it will say "WRITING" - your firmware is now being flashed back. This will take about 15 seconds.

STEP 6: It will say `DONE` in the top left of the screen, and the player will SWITCH ITSELF OFF

STEP 7: Press `OPEN` (NOT `POWER` as I found to my horror - the player locks up!!!) and fetch the disc out.

STEP 8: Now press `POWER` - the picture won`t be great but don`t worry, `cos 3.3 will sort that out.

STEP 9: Now enter the Encore 450 hack as normal : i.e. press `STOP` on the remote, then `SETUP` on the remote, then 3,8,8,8,3 on the remote and you`ll be in the loopholes menu.

STEP 10: (See picture on Page 2) Don`t fiddle with the Region ID or the CSS - you can sort the Region later, using the same hack, when you`ve done the 3.3 upgrade. Use the cursor key to go down to Macrovision, press ENTER, select `OFF` and press ENTER again - to get out just press SETUP on the remote again if it won`t let you out using the cursor keys. Job done!

(2) Firmware Version 3.3

You used to be able to download this, but not any more, alas.... This firmware will restore your 450 to its former glory and also get rid of lip-sync problems on R1 discs. The Macrovision will still be disabled even after this upgrade

Basically follow STEPS 1 to 7 again.

When you switch it back on the picture will be back to normal. And don`t worry, it saves your settings before you went sticking CDs into it!!! "

Please follow the instructions to the letter, esp. Step 8 of Version 2.0 - if you press the wrong button (i.e POWER) you may be in trouble - I got away with it, somehow

I would warn other users who are planning to perform this trick to remove Macrovision to think carefully before going ahead with it !

My player is currently frozen with no signs of this changing any time soon !

It looks like this can happen even when you follow the directions which clayts posted above.
