masala (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 27th November 2000, 20:38

After a full week of looking for a DVD that plays cd`s well at under 200 I had it down to the Awiaxxd370 and the LC3500.
Now there is the pioneer 530 the spec looks good at the pioneer site www.pioneer-eur.com. Linkon line have it with paragon upgrade for 199.00
This is so confusing
anyone got one and is it any good

I`ve just got my first player and can sympathise with your confusion - every machine seems to have its good and bad points. I normally only buy kit after reading magazine reviews but took the plunge with the DV530 after the praise it was given by others in this forum.
So, is it any good? Yes!!
Picture: excellent resolution and stability, even with subtle gradients of colour.
Sound: I`ve only got a stereo amp at the moment so can`t comment.
Features: bought mine over the net from Techtronics with multi-region upgrade, plays everything I`ve thrown at it (can handle RCE disks also). Has got all the usual stuff: streaming of DD and DTS, RGB output - nothing really missing. Plays CDR`s.
Only minus points are the fiddly remote buttons and the rather noisy playing mechanism (maybe its just my machine) - easily solved by more volume!
Overall, I don`t think you would be disappointed.

I`ll second that opinion. Also, I`ll add that the sound is great. It`s linked up to a Yamaha DSPA5 through the coaxial digital output.

I did notice that it was a little bit noisy, but it varies from disc to disc.

It`s silent with a CD in it though. This doesn`t bother me since the DVD player and amp is in a wooden cabinet with a door on it at the other end of the room which blocks out the noise. Noise is a small factor though when you consider the sounds that come out of vcr motors.

As for the remote, the buttons are a little small, but the only ones I ever use on it are menu, play, open and maybe skip chapter, and I could find those in the dark. It`s fine once you get used to it.

All in all, a great performer, well worth £198 from Techtronics (or £199 from Paragon is it?)
