Sony DVD Stereo MHC-S9D hack needed - Anyone out there help?

OK guy`s....gotta lot of help in a previous incarnation.....anyone help out with this one, would be much obliged. My lovely old Dad has just bought a Sony MHC-S9D DVD Stereo combi.
The DVD component part is model DVP-S9. Does anyone out there know of a region hack that will work with this.....he can get his DVD`s from relatives/friends across the pond.
If you can help .....I`d be obliged.
P.S Can anyone please tell me why parents always have to go the extra yard and buy bigger & better??????
