Is the Pioneed DV-444 only multi-region if it has been chipped? Its just my friend said he has just got one for Christmas from a Highstreet shop (not sure which one as it was a present) and it plays American (Region 1) DVD`s without any problems.

thanx Colin, it was a present for me as well. I`ve tried a region 1 dvd (fast & furious) but it didn`t work.

The Pioneer 444 is upgraded by uploading new firmware ( the cover is not removed) but can only be done by a chipper
