Sony DVP-NS300/DVP-NS400 Remote mod......for real???

Steve Middleton (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 12th July 2001, 14:27

OK, I seriously doubt the possibility of this "One4All" remote mod for the new Sony DVD Players. First of all, Sony have more reason to protect region coding than any other hardware manufacturer (we don`t see Philips producing movies do we?) so that is one major reason why such a simple hack would never be engineered into the Sony DVD Players.

Second, never...in all the years Sony has been producing DVD Players, have they engineered *ANY* kind of hack into the machines....why would they start now? Sony have recently declared their continuing support for region coding, it`s not like they have had a sudden change of heart.

The only way I see this as being possible is if the new machines are being produced cheaply by some sub-manufacturer. We know that Pioneer have outsourced manufacturing of the DV-340 and DV-343 because they needed a sub-£200 machine quickly - but Pioneer didn`t include a remote hack, even on this new, cheap machine.

Somebody tell me different!

Steve

Basically, semi-universal "remote" mod for new Sony is possible. A little that, it even exists. :)

http://mapserv.com/mmasco/brelk86e.jpg
(here photos of a real "remote" mod device)

BUT, it is not completely universal, not absolutely remote and does not eliminate a problem with RCE and Macrovision. :)

UNIVERSAL REMOTE MOD FOR SONY - IS NOT POSSIBLE!
Also causes doubts of existence mod through RC, though I admit such opportunity.

Some facts:

Sony players has two independent processors named IFCON and SYSCON. IFCON serves peripheral devices, including RC. SYSCON is engaged in all by rest, including regional protection.
We completely have disassembled SYSCON firmware. Really Sony has a "multizone" backdoor, but NOT FOR ALL SUBMODELS.

In the SYSCON there no mechanism of activation of a backdoor through RC, only through "PC interface". However, IFCON can force SYSCON to execute any SYSCON subroutine. We did not disassemble the firmware of a IFCON and we admit an opportunity of activation of a backdoor through RC, but never heard that someone made it.

In any case, the backdoor in Sony is not universal, and on half of submodels it cannot be used. As an example the table of submodels for Sony players assembled on MB86 motherboard (Sony x35/x36/x60) is given below. Everywhere where column CODE contains a word IMPOSSIBLE - anyone remote mod is impossible. To look submodel of your player: in a standby mode, press on RC the following sequence: [TITLE] [CLEAR] [POWER].

Attention! Do not use any items in the menu which will appear on the screen, except for item " Version information". It is not safe! For an exit from this service menu - switch off the player.

Sorry for my english.

Well of course, just like everyone else (i.e. all the dealers), we have ordered one and anxiously await their arrival. I understand the codes for the One4All are coming from Japan - who can say when/if they will arrive???

Steve.

P.S. The price for the remote was £200 for previous customers of Frank/David, £400 for new customers. However, I am sure the code will be on the net in a matter of weeks should it ever surface!!!

I don`t understand why this is so expensive. How come people don`t just aget a cheapo multi region player for less than the asking price of that gizmo?
You`d have to be seriously well off to go the route of getting that little gizmo.

Unless it`s a one off and you can remove it once done? Then you can rent it out?

Someone care to explain?

it`s aimed at dealers and chippers like us ... we havent ordered it or infact ordered anything from these people .. we already have a "Magic" solution for the NS300 / 400 so would have no need to do so

I`ve heard that a few dealers have had them but are a bit annoyed at the lack of rce and macro off that was in the second email sent out by dfrench. [Notice that he doesn`t offer the Sony 3.0 kit on his site now]

Apparently the remote loophole has been fixed in the latest batch anyway.

BTW SAS - nice info and nice mod.
