mpeg 2 AVI codec viewers??? what does it all mean?

Sorry to all technoligically superior people out there but my brain hurts!
Here`s the problem;
Bought a Targa dvd recorder 4 weeks ago and have had the following problems
1. Taped Nip/Tuck from Sky one (we have NTL Cable) and edited the adverts out...then recorded it onto a disc (DVD-RW), but recorded version and edited version has serious lip sync problems.
2. Taped programme from Channel 4 (may have been viewed through NTL....can`t remember.) Programme recorded fine but when put onto a DVD-RW there were lip sync problems. Version on Hard drive has no such problems.
3. Started taping programme from Channel 4 (was viewed through NTL box) and those annoying lip sync problems are there.

Have called Targa help desk who gave me this explanation;

Digital broadcasts are MPEG2 encoded broadcasts and as such are compressed. When I recorded Nip/Tuck then edited it the problem comes as the machine re-assembles the edited version back together. He said I would need to decode it to an AVI? edit it then code it back into MPEG 2.
However I can`t understand why this problem happened on an un-edited recording (see no.3) or why it should work then go wrong when put on a disc (see no.2)

Can anyone explain this to me any clearer?
Many thanks

Just a couple of things. Targa DRH-5000 is this the machine you are using?

Are the unedited versions you have playing ok from the hard drive?

If yes to the above. Then the problem I think you are having is when you split the video to take out the adverts and recombining them if that is what you are doing.

This problem sometimes happens when you join the edited files back together, there can be a delay from the picture and audio.

You can do as the tech people said and re-encode it to avi then edit it. Or you could just record the individual clips to the blank dvd.

Send a bit more info on how you are editing the recorded content and I maybe able to help a bit more.

Cheers
