Philips EEPROM Upgrd resetting counter
An inquiry, if I may...
As many are aware, there is a patch available for most Philips players that allow an upgrade of a player`s firmware. This is done by burning the new firmware onto a CDR and playing it in the Philips player. I`ve not yet had the chance to do this, but I was curious as to whether doing so would reset the player`s 25 region changes counter, as I have quite stupidly already locked mine.
If this is not so, would anyone happen to know if there is an RC6 method which can be done using a `Radioshack` remote control?
Also, how good are the Philips machines against the new RCE encoded discs such as `The Patriot`?
RE: Philips EEPROM Upgrd resetting counter
good day sir.....may i respond to your enquiry with one of my own?....
how does one have time to watch these new DVD contraptions when there is so much still to do at the manor....what!what!.....em
but seriously my lord.......
the firmware does not reset the EEPROM......you can (if you wish)...connect your DVD player to your PC via RS232 and reset the NVRAM.....or you can use the RC6 method which bypasses the 25 limit.......
and once again.....the hack is RCE proof!.....

Yes yes... quite quite. Cherrio, pip pip, and all that happy horse $#!t ^v^
Indeed, the RS232 method sounds of good interest. Need I get a specific cable of some kind to hook up my DVD player, or can this be done with a standard computer serial cable? Need I also get a certain specific software program to perform the reset?
It is my understanding that the RC6 method can only be accessed with a specific programable remote like a `One-for-all`, or via a certain IR unit in a Palmpilot. Unfortunately, I do not own a Palm, and I am a rather cheap bastard who doesn`t want to spend $30 on a replacement remote... soooo...

Tarin, you need a null-modem cable and you can use the Hiperterminal Windows program. The problem is that you need to know the command set to control your player...
RE: Philips EEPROM Upgrd resetting counter
May I recommend a rather dirty deed, which while allowing you to change the region count using the RC6 method, may shock and disturb the morals of the reading public (har har).
After buying my philips DVD Player, instead of spending another £30 on an "all for one 6" to allow full region access, I simply popped into my local high street store (in this case Dixons), bought the controller, ran back home, hacked the player, and returned the controller the next day for a full refund.
Unfortunately, you may have to "play dumb", and blame perhaps a relative for buying an unwanted gift, but otherwise, a sound investment of time.
Please, don`t judge me, I am beyond help.
