Just spoke to Sharp CS about a region hack - muppets!!
I saw another thread on here asking about how to find out a region hack for yourself, one suggestion was to simply ring the manufacturer and ask. So that`s exactly what I did! I`ve got a Sharp SD-AT50H Home Cinema kit, and the DVD player (DX-AT50) at present is R2 only. I rung and asked and the guy said it`s Sharp policy not to make their DVD players region hackable, the guy also said that there are NO hackable Sharp DVD players at all. I told him this was rubbish as the DV740H player is hackable using a disc!! He just repeated the "it`s company policy not to make them region hackable" tosh. He also said he can only go by what he`s been trained on.
Hmmmm, methinks Sharp aren`t telling their CS staff all the facts. So I`m still without a region hack. There`s got to be SOME way of hacking it!! I`ve also had trouble finding out info about this system on the net.

The guy was telling the truth, I suspect. The DV740H is multi-regionable, but that wasn`t actually made by Sharp, it was manufactured by Sampo under licence.
Anyway, the post I replied to was about a Matsui unit. I think you`ll have a lot less luck speaking to the `biggies` like Sharp, Sony etc. - unless you`re lucky enough to find a sympathetic soul who doesn`t just parrot the corporate line. (For example, I`ve heard that staff at some Sony Centres are quite happy to make Sony players multi-region if you ask them.)
The smaller brands like Matsui, Bush etc. are a lot more `multi-region friendly`, on the whole.

Yeah, looks like I`ll have to buy the R2 versions of the films I have in R1. :(

I don`t mean to be a moaning minnie, but why didn`t you check what you bought was capable of being hacked before you bought it ?
This lack of research by some folk before splashing the cash continues to disturb me... ;-)
Mike is right, of course - aside from the DV740H (and possibly one new player, the `20H), none of Sharp`s products are hackable by the owner - your only option is to fork out a wedge to a company specialising in modifying the processor board :-(

It was the last day of the sale, I had work later on so couldn`t check it out on the net and then come back, and it was half price!! It retails for £399, I had it for £199, multi-region or not it was a bargain. I haven`t bought any R1 dvd`s for ages anyway as most dvd`s now get worldwide releases or are released shortly after (sometimes before) the R1`s. Also my friend has the Sharp DV740H which IS hackable, so I took a chance that this might be too.
