Quality differences between region1 & region2
Having used the excellent Thomson dth 3300 hack found on these hallowed pages I am now able to play multi region however is it my imagination or are region 1 discs of slightly poorer quality (by that i mean not quite as sharp)
I also found that my opening Thomson screen (the highly exciting grey background wow!) and other thomson option screens were slightly poorer quality than before (i have selected RGB as one of the options which seems to have helped) Just wondering if its all in my head or if anyone else has noticed the same.
( i had my laser upgraded by Currys not long after purchase as the thomson would not play dual layers properly .. does this have a bearing?)
Ps: Even with the hack when i try to tape dvd to vcr the quality is pretty naff (fades in and out)
I leave it you your collective genius you dvd gurus!!
RE: Quality differences between region1 & region2
Region 1 discs use the NTSC (National Television Standards Council or as I prefer Never The Same Colour) picture standard which uses less lines to make up the picture on your TV screen. 525 lines compared with 625 used with Region 2 PAL discs. This is why your picture appears to be not quite as sharp.
If the picture when you record from DVD to VHS is poor this could be because the copy protection used on DVD is still in operation. If you are trying to copy from Region 1 discs the quality will be poor because of the conversion between NTSC and PAL formats.
