Japanese Studio Ghibli DVD Player - Region Hack?

james zappa (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 2nd August 2002, 17:43

Hi!

My Ghibli DVD Player arrived today from Japan. It`s Region 2 and but not play Region 2 Pal discs.

I saw the same player on eBay but Region Free. Able to play all regions and NTSC/PAL. I emailed the seller and asked if it was a firmware hack or done via the remote, he replied that a dealer in HK did it and it was not a hack (I`m guessing he meant wasnt a firmware hack)

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

Thanks!

Edit: One ebay listing says that the player is manufactured by Funai

if it is direct from Japan then it won`t play PAL at all due to the Japanese broadcast system being NTSC also. The HK one worked because HK is a PAL region.

If there are hacks or chips available for it, it will play region 1 but it will still not play PAL discs.

UK system has a slight quirk, in that it is region 2 but a PAL system is used therefore players are usually designed as NTSC but have PAL added on where necessary not the other way around
