Got the kit at last..but how the heck to connect it..help please!!!

MFC999 (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 24th November 2000, 21:08

I`ve finally persuaded the wife that we cannot live without dvd and have got a philips 9616 dolby digital tv, pioneer 636dvd, panasonic nv760 vcr and pace sky digibox.
The tv has four scarts, (two RGB?) everything else has two scart connectors, but what scarts should go where, between what or via what else before the tv.
I can only think of needing to connect the sky to the vcr, before the tv? but any advice or pointing towards a website for novices would be most appreciated, thanks

OK try and see if this helps:

Scart cable 1: To TV AV1 and VCR AV1
Scart cable 2: To TV AV2 and Sky digibox "TV" AV
Scart cable 3: To VCR AV2 and Sky digibox "VCR" AV
Scart cable 4: To TV AV3 and Pioneer 626 AV out

To Watch: Normal TV select station;
Sky TV select AV2 on the TV
DVD select AV3 on the TV

To Record: Normal TV as usual select station;
Sky select AV2 on VCR
(If using the videoplus+ system to record, check your
instruction manual to see how to map channell 6 on the
VCR to select AV2 instead under "videoplus+ channel
mapping" usually)

Hope this helps, post back if it doesn`t or you experience problems! :o)

MFC999, I`ve been buying my system for a while now so that the appearance of yet another black box doesn`t cause too much concern;-) I started with the VCR (Philips VR860), then came the Philips set top box, more recently the Scan SC-2000 and next on the list is the Philips 28PW9616 (how is it, by the way?).

Anyway, at the moment I still have my old single-scart Matsui and so I thought that connecting everything would be a nightmare. However, I did consciously make sure that everything had at least 2 scarts and so I currently have them connected like this:

VCR
^
¦
STB-->DVD-->TV

This seems to work ok. There could be problems I haven`t come across as yet, of course.

When I get the new TV, I will probably attach the VCR to AV2 on that.

I think that the DVD should go to either AV1 or AV2 if you want RGB but I am happy to be corrected on this.

If I remember rightly from the reviews of the Philips Dolby Digital TVs in the mags, the DVD player must be connected to Scart 1 on the TV if you are using the digital input from the DVD player to the TV for Dolby Digital sound. Also, if your VCR is "smartlink" enabled and you want to use that facility, then the VCR has to go to Scart 2 on the TV. If you haven`t got, or don`t want to use "smartlink" then I`d connect your Sky box to Scart 2, that way you get both the DVD and Sky box as RGB.

RGB output scart from DVD to Scart 1 on TV.
TV scart from Sky box to Scart 2 on TV.
VCR AV1 in/out scart to the TV Scart 3.
VCR AV2 input to the VCR scart on the Sky box.

For terrestrial TV, your aerial will probably need to go via both the VCR and the Sky box. To record from the Sky box, do as Jimbo said and set the VCR to the correct channel, normally either AV1 or AV2 (It varies with manufacturer). To watch VCR, just switch the TV to AV3, to watch Sky switch the TV to AV2 and to watch DVD set the TV to AV1.

Feedback on the TV would be appreciated as I am thinking about the 32 inch version.

The only problem you`ll get from that set up Nexstar is that anything played back from the VCR would be in Mono.

You can buy a scart multi splitter for aroun £10 to £15 to multiply the TV available scarts, however, when playing back a tape, you`d need to put the other equipment on standby or disconnect them!

Unfortunately, everything`s in mono until I get my new telly:-( I thought that there must be some flaw in this setup. The nice thing is that, if you want to play the vcr you just press play, if you want the DVD you just switch it on etc etc.

Out of interest and probably a foolish question but, why don`t I get stereo sound? (apart from the obvious of it being a mono set!)

Yep, daft question mate! It`s the telly! lol

If you have an AUX or VCR input on your hifi though, connect it to that and turn the sound on yer telly off and use the Hifi as your sound source!

Then you will get glorious stereo sound...next step Dolby 5.1 or DTS!

:o)

Hmmm! No, what I meant Jimbo, was that you seemed to be saying that, even if I had a stereo telly, with the way I had it set up I would only be getting a mono signal. Is that right? Sorry, I`m easily confused:-(

The prospect of DD AND widescreen after my mono Matsui.......:-)

Anyway, MFC999, where`s the feedback on that 9616! ;-)

Oops..sorry matey! lol

Yes, using the aerial lead from the video will give mono only. The scart to the TV must be connected to get stereo from the video.

If you have two scarts on the vcr, connect AV1 to the Sky digibox, and AV2 to your hifi, then you can get stereo even from your TV stations! (you just have to have the vcr on the channel you wanna watch!)

Ahem!!!!!

Someone has not read my original posting properly.

It does say to connect the VCR AV1 Scart to the TV Scart 3. The connection for the aerial is only so you can still record terrestrial TV.

Yes, you will only get mono playback if you only connect via the aerial.

Connect the way I suggested and you will get stereo playback from the VCR and be able to record from the digibox and terrestrial TV. I have two VCRs connected to two satellite receivers exactly as described and get stereo playback from both VCRs.
