For painting, the 'easiest' (or at least more accessible for a beginner) is watercolour. You can buy books of special watercolour paper and simple palettes of watercolour paint and a few brushes.

Next step up is probably Gouache (pronounced goo-ash) or acrylic, which is still watercolour paint but in tubes like oil paint. It's thicker than simple watercolour and you can be a bit bolder and less wishy-washy.

Oil is more of a commitment because you'll need prepared canvases (although you can use board) and takes a lot more skill and technique and it ain't cheap. Watch Bob Ross!

I haven't even checked but there must be LOADS of info, beginner videos, etc. online. I used to watch old Nancy Kominsky tv shows as a kid and she'd show you painting techniques. I wouldn't mind having a go myself if I had the time!

There is no such thing as a straight line (according to Einstein).

There are, I'm sure, more contemporary art teachers online now that might do a better job of instruction but Bob Ross is an interesting cult figure (I'm surprised you don't appear to know who he is) and Kominsky is just someone I remember from childhood. Good luck!

Use to love watching that bloke on tv with the big frizzy hair and beard from America/Canada as a kid

Cannot remember his name though!

Also you cannot beat a bit of Tony Hart... he was fantastic in all mediums.
