Most of the conversation is happening in the “Coronavirus, is anyone getting worried” thread.

Of all the diseases that have vaccines, only one or two have vaccines that have a permanent effect. Most give immunity that fades with time. Science hasn’t bothered with coronaviruses up till now as the worst that could happen was the common cold. But now Covid comes along, A new kind of Coronavirus that’s much worse.

The thing I’ve read about colds is that after you get one, your body produces antibodies to that strain of cold which last six months before it becomes possible for you to catch that same cold virus again. It would be reasonable to expect the same from Covid.

The best estimate I’ve heard for the Covid vaccine is that the immunity will wear off after a year. So getting a booster shot once a year, just as with the flu will be advisable, but as the vaccines have only been around three months, scientists will have to observe how they work before they can say for sure.

The second issue comes with the variants. As Covid keeps mutating, and throwing up new versions, just like the flu, they’re going to have to tweak the vaccines constantly to keep up until the virus mutates into something benign. That’s the second reason, just as important to get booster shots.

On a personal happy note, I actually jumped for joy yesterday when I learned that I’m getting my first jab today.

Congratulations!

How are people's local communities feeling about jabs? When I talk to a lot of dogwalkers they seem to have either had theirs already or are looking forward to getting them.

My friends are the same, but I know there seems to be resistance in some areas.

Well, had my jab... I think. I didn’t feel a thing, and my aversion to needles meant that I kept my eyes averted. So I’m paranoid that I’ve been conned.

Now I’m hoping for some side effects just to confirm that I got the jab, a sore arm at least...

Could've stuck anything in me, or not.
Total wuss if someone is going to put a needle in me.

You may notice an overwhelming affection for Bill Gates, don't worry, it won't pass.

I said some side effects... Not all of them! If I've been conned, that was the worst placebo ever.

Fevers and chills, fatigue and muscle pain, headache and the sore arm. Still, beats lying face down in a coma hooked up to a ventilator.

think i was lucky, just two days feeling lethargic...

Hopefully second jab in next 6 to 8 weeks?

I am told that it will be available to all from July onwards, so kids/teenagers should be able to get it.

What's the future, who knows, I suspect we will end up being able to have an annual jab like the Flu, all viruses mutate, hence that they don't protect forever.

On the whole I think the Govt/development companies/NHS have done a brilliant job getting us to this stage so quickly...

I hope that in future we are as determined quick to develop medicines for other diseases
