Need some help with new PC

skirpy (Elite) posted this on Friday, 12th April 2002, 15:27

Hello, can anyone help me here, i have just purchased a new Emachines P4 PC and am very happy with it, but while setting it up and getting used to it.....the PC froze on me.

Its the freeze when pressing CTRL ALT and DELETE does,nt work and you have to resort to pressing the reset button to start it up again with the error message.

But on my new machine there is no reset button that i can see, so i had to switch it off at the mains.

My two previous PCs had a reset button so i would imagine there is something that can be done when this happens.

I dont know if you can asign the PowerOn button to act as a Reset button as well,
its only happened the once but i would like to know if there is something i can do if it happens again.

I would appreciate some help!

Thanks.

dunno if this is any good to you.

but when my PC crashes, sometimes it won`t turn off if you just press the power button.
if you hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds or so it will eventually power off, so you won`t have to resort to switching it off at the wall

I`ve seen PCs with a single button that does both reset and turn off depending on how long/hard you press it.

I tried holding it in for 2-3 seconds but nothing happened, maybe if i had held it in longer.

The manual tells you nothing and the website technical help service wants all your details, Where you live, Phone No..etc before they answer you.

I dont like to give out all my details so i will just wait until it happens again and try your methods.

Cheers

You need to hold it in, untill it turns off. Could be up to 10 seconds or more.

It`s usually a 4 second delay, and can be configured in the BIOS (watch out for a message when booting - usually "press Del to go into BIOS". There may (depending on the BIOS) be an option for running that button as a reset, too, though it`s not an option I`ve come across.
