Any algebra buffs?

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Monday, 24th February 2020, 14:57

For my sins, I'l regularly buy the Sun on a saturday purely for the quizzes, plus the rest of the paper is handy to get a fire started in these chilly winter months.

I've started to concentrate on the brainboxer, a little puzzler that tends to lend itself to algebra to find the solution. I am, however, thwarted by this week's entry

So far I'm at (with Charlotte being C. Rachel being R and Vicky being V)

8xR=25xV => R=25/8xV

V=R-34 => V=25/8xV-34

C=V/4

V's obviously the constant, but now I'm stuck. Or am I going about it backwards?

Here's what I got...

charlotte-v = x
vicky-v = 4x
rachel-v = 4x +34

25 (4x) = 8 (4x +34)

100x = 32x + 272

68x = 272

x = 4

Your 3 equations are fine Pete - but make R the subject in your second one (as you have done in the first).
You then have 2 with R as the subject and just substitute into the first...
V + 34 = 25/8 V
34 = 17/8 V
8 x 34/17 =V
V = 16
Put that into your last equation..
C = 16/4
C = 4

Being an Engineer who tends to throw algebra, calculus and all that rubbish to the side and instead uses calculations based on experience, I would say Charlotte was definitely walking at walking pace

Engineers thought process....
In fact when I was first at Engineering classes we were taught the difference between an Architect a Mathematician and an Engineer. Never forgot it.

Given the dilemma of trying to reach a beautiful woman on the other side of the room, but after the first step, the next step must be halved, and then next step halved again. We find that the Architect and the Mathematician gives up, but the Engineer steps out, keeps walking and says "I am getting there"

And this is why the Engineer has to find a practical solution that works, to all problems set by others, and preferably without a headache
