Government halts support for fracking.

Massive relief I'm sure to so many people already affected and many more who could have been.

"The ban marks a major U-turn for the Conservative party and the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who once referred to fracking as “glorious news for humanity” and urged the UK to “leave no stone unturned, or unfracked” in pursuit of shale gas."

This is good news, but also wouldn't surprise me if they u-turn on their u-turn next year. Johnson's government do not care about the environment.

Funny how this decision was made a few days after an election was announced. I wonder...

Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom said it may be temporary - imposed "until and unless" extraction is proved safe.

I doubt this was related to the election as I'm not convinced fracking was a huge electoral issue...

Not the most reliable source, but apparently Leadsom has said its only a temporary ban (until scientific understanding improves...).

But not what it has been, usually it's been subject to financial interests.

Also fracking is definitely an election issue here on the Isle of Wight, not as big as a lot of others but when your house likes to get closer to becoming a sea property all on its own, the idea of earthquakes helping it along...

I get both of those, financial benefits have to be weighed up but safety should always come first and locally it may be an issue but in fairness that's a single constituency...

It's a couple of them, but this is also the start of the election campaign and the sort of issue the majority of the country agree on, so it's a good early thing to throw out there.

It was mostly dead anyway, it was quietly dying. If you really think the government didn't announce this because of the election, you probably believe the announcement on the unfreezing of the benefit cap is a change in policy, and the extra police announced are a long term increase and not actually just replacing most (but not all) of the ones cut by the tories. :/
