Shet happens!

bandicoot (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 16th February 2019, 23:25

Well I was all set to leave UK in four months. Then Murphys law kicked in

My right eye has been clouding over the last few months and found out got a cataract, and will be a complete blur soon. Now on waiting list on NHS, could be up to six months or more.
So this will delay leaving the UK till sorted.

This is what happens when you get old, you start falling apart. I have never used the NHS, touch wood, other than a few minor work accidents, so glad they are there when you need them.

There is nothing worse than losing part of your eyesight, having 20/20 vision all these years and not needing glasses till now to compensate for this problem. Its a real bugger.

I was actually relived when the eye guy told me it was a cataract as that is fixable nowadays, as I was fearing the worst like high blood pressure damage, or diabetes my worst fear, which finished my Dad off. Been off sugar for decades to avoid this.

Anyway no worries, its something treatable, and My mother went through this eye operation years ago, and said her vision was great afterwards, even better than it was.

Just got to take the kicks that life brings, and looking forward to a bionic eye lenz

Glad you've got that silver lining to look forward to.

I've had a defect in my right eye since birth. For year the opticians just thought it was a lazy eye, so I was subjected to years of having to wear an elastoplast over my good eye to 'train' the bad eye to get better. It never worked, and all it did was make me virtually blind for the mornings where I couldn;t do any schoolwork because I couldn't see. Once I hit 14 the opticians realised nothing could be done, but still I had this defect. The best way I can describe it is 100% peripheral vision-level quality. I still have good visual fields, so I'm still allowed to drive a truck.

Unfortunately, and I'd suspected this would happen since childhood, the good eye was doing all the work, and started to give up a couple of years ago. I booked myself in for a proper eye exam, where I was given a prescription for glasses, but also referred to an opthalmologist, who told me that I had glaucoma in the good eye, for which there is no cure - yet.

So, knackered in one eye, glaucoma in the other, controlled with monopost (latanoprost). The next person who talks to me about intelligent design gets a punch in the nose.

Glad your prognosis is a positive one, honestly wouldn't wish s***yy eyesight on my worst enemy.

I imagine as you are an Australian that is things like... leg gets cut off, work mate picks it up and hands it to you and says, "she'll be right"

Eyes are my favourite topic with those people, nobody can explain if it's so intelligent why the optic nerve is on the wrong side? Maybe someone just wanted to get home early that day...

Fairly straightforward procedure these days so once the wait is over you should be okay.
Worth looking at private if it effects your schedule? Bearing in mind there's going to be a bit of aftercare involved?
Good luck with it anyway.

Put this one in your favourites for those who think we co-existed with T Rex.

Thanks for the input guys, I am a great believer in the NHS system in this country, pity most others did not follow suit. Having paid my stamps all my life I am sticking with NHS for treatment, even if there is a delay with regard waiting lists.

When I move back to Oz will have to take a medical insurance on.

I will be finishing work soon anyway due to retirement, if fact it should have been a few months back at 65, but as they moved the retirement age here, I have still a few months more to go.

So when is a pensioner not a pensioner..In the UK as they keep moving the goal posts.  My younger son who works here says the way it is going he will be 70 before retirement. Rant over

Some Australians are so butch they say they do not feel pain after an accident if they get some booze in them.....but the truth is if you get an accident in the remote bushlands, it can take a day or more to get treatment, even with modern transportation today, so you have to grin and bare it, assuming you survive.

Did they come with the trilby and nodding dog or are you getting them separately?

So much for the NHS slow waiting lists, got my letter to come into hospital for eye inspection in a few weeks... pre operation check. so that will have been 6 weeks.

Not sure how long it takes from that to the operation day.

Looking forward to it, as every month, eye is getting more cloudy, not good for someone that had 20/20 vision all his life till now.

You should see the NHS patient check list I had to fill in, got things like whats your race, you religion, are you a transsexual, etc, not sure what all that has to do with an eye operation, LOL :D
