Suggestions needed - basic sky & freeview or Fibre Broadband & streaming...

So I'm looking into options for my sister who is a bit strapped for cash... she doesn't watch much TV but needs something in the house for her and my niece. Her street has Virgin and fibre so she has options. My question is, would she be better getting unlimited fibre broadband and streaming content to her Smart TV or just some cheap basic freeview/sky and broadband package?

You can stream most of the popular freeview channels now can’t you?

I have Netflix so she can have free access to this…

Any suggestions on options, pros and cons?

If Freeview coverage isn't great, there's always Freesat as well. (Not Sky's Freesat). We have both, and a broadband connection adds some services on the Smart Tv. Newer TVs have catch-up services built in, Freeview Play. There are so many channels that a subscription package is meaningless to someone who just watches casually. Unless your sister is a Game of Thrones fan, then just the Licence Fee should be affordable.

I've got the most basic Virgin package, which is freeview and a few other things. ( I was going to cancel TV, but by having TV, phone, and broadband, it's cheaper to have a bundle for all 3, than to have two things, and it's useful to have the TIVO box!)

We don't watch TV much these days, and that provides enough for us, there's a few kids channels, and the regular ones and their +1s

I went down the route of packing in Sky for a few months, and reverted to freeview, then got a half price deal to come back to Sky, as so many had left due to constant price increases, So I have got to see Westworld and game of thrones on Sky Atlantic.

i went from £30 to £15 fixed price per month for a year, and will pack them in again and go back to freeview, unless the offer continues, as Sky is well overpriced.

I am out in the sticks (countryside) and do not have the option of cheap fiber offers, so its either Sky dish or freeview.

For your sister, if cost is important, then freeview offers quite a lot of channels, except at 4AM til 8AM all you get is almost every channel reverting to shopping channels.

She's not a lady of the night bandi so lack of options 4am till 8am shouldn't be a problem! 😀

Her new house has never had sky so I'm worried any basic sky package might come with a installation charge.

NOW TV have a broadband/TV package which sounds good for her, I'm just not sure how NowTV will be as a provider!

Is 17Mb line enough for streaming? A wired connection to the TV should be good enough yes...guessing wifi might struggle.

The trouble with Freeview is coverage. If you have an aerial pointed at a main transmitter, then you'll get all 100 or so channels, but if you're pointed at a relay, then you get Freeview Lite, which is about 20 channels.

Stick a postcode into this site and you'll see what's available.

It's not perfect though. My nearest transmitter is a relay, and when i put my postcode in, I get the listing for Lite. But my aerial's actually pointed at the main one, so I get them all. Also a TV with a DVB 2 tuner is preferable (or a digibox), as a few channels can't be picked up on old boxes.

I played the old "wait for offers" game.

I recently moved to a new flat and had been studying the offers each supplier was offering and also the cashback sites.

In the end I opted for BT.
They were offering 30% off TV sub prices plus 25% off fibre price.
Along with this they gave a £200 loaded mastercard plus I got £130 cashback from TCB.
So I think it works out about £41 per month I pay for TV and Fibre - but if you factor in the money back it's around £13pm (I think)

Anyway, I'm not sure what they are all offering right now - but worth a look, or even waiting for something to kick in again,
