Anyone gone sugar free?

Gavski (Elite) posted this on Monday, 26th June 2017, 09:30

Morning people

Seems like an age since I posted here. I do pop in from time to time to read the goings on...

My question today is has anyone quit sugar? And what were the results? I've just started this journey and was interested to find your views.

I've been trying to get healthier and lose weight for the last 18 months - but nothing has really worked, even extreme diets and training. So I thought I'd give this a go.

I've done 6 days now - feeling a bit lethargic and tempted by the plethora of treats in the office but have resisted. Apart form becoming much healthier from no processed foods it can dramatically cut your belly and chin down in size (this is what I need!)

Hope all is well with all the revs!

Ah that's where it's coming from.
I must have been eating your allowance as well.

Constantly being tired results in not being able to pass a packet of biscuits or cake. Sugar = instant energy.

Hello stranger BTW.

I've gone halfway. I've cut down on processed food to the degree that seventy percent of what I eat is freshly prepared. I use artificial sweetener in my tea, and for sugar I've switched to the unrefined stuff that you get from Billingtons. Unlike the white stuff, it has flavour, which is nice, and it is so much sweeter that a kilo bag lasts me four times as long as the white stuff. Costs three times the price though. I am healthier, but it's no panacea.

I have been sugar free for years but still my weight was increasing, mainly because I was kidding myself by having lots lagers and beers galore at the weekend round the barbie.

My doctor warned me that my weight would be a killer in older age, as have always had a heavy build for working phisically in the construction industry that needs a lot of in build strength for manual labour.

Since i moved to a staff position, I have not done manual work for years, and my doctor talked about high pressure blood problems requiring pills that have nasty side effects, or do more exercise and cut down on sugar and calorie intake. I decided on the latter.

Since then I have reduced dairy products, fattening food  and cut down on the beers, and went from a heavy 17 stone in 2013 and now down to 14 stone.

My goal by the end of this year is to get down to 13 stone by doing a lot of walking. The ideal weight should be 12 stone for my height, Did 11 miles walking last weekend down at the coast, and the wife and the dog are as knackered as me. But this is far better than starting on nasty pills.

Also stress at work is a big factor, hence my escape to the cinema when I can during working hours, also taking a lot of holidays and days off when I can, and hopefully finish up in a year or two for retirement, before my work finishes me.

Cutting down on salt is another good idea. Believe it or not, the palate soon gets used to food without salt. I no longer sprinkle salt on my food, and in food that we cook, we're at a quarter teaspoon where we used to use two. Practically most of the salt that I eat comes in processed food. That's why we only eat TV dinners once every two weeks (or anything with a can of baked beans), and I have two or maybe three slices of bread a day. It is processed food that is the killer. Sweet food uses salt as a preservative, so they up the sugar content to compensate. Savoury food uses sugar as a preservative, so they up the salt content to compensate.

Going truly sugar free is pretty difficult, and the idea of doing it forever sounds tortuous! If you were allowed to cheat at the weekend at least you don't have the prospect of never eating sugar again.

I've done very low carb diets in the past and weight fell off me, but that was pretty extreme and I couldn't do it forever.

I'm currently on a intermittent fasting diet - fasting every other day rather than 5:2 (I do get to eat a modest dinner in the evening, but nothing else). I've done these off and on for years and it works for me.

Normally I'm a regular gym goer but have barely been over the last 6 months and the fat has crept on as the muscle has shrunk away...

Agree its hard to not take in some sugar, there is sugar hidden in quite a lot of things, but the secret is moderation.

Wish I could afford a gym to go to, but all are far too expensive round our way, that's why I am doing the walking, as its free, except for destroying my sandals quicker.

It's incredibly difficult to work out what does and doesn't have the sugar in. I'm trying it for four weeks (before holiday) to see the difference (if any) it makes.
I did really well last week, made all meals from scratch and ate protein and veg and fruit (although true sugar refrainers don't even eat that) But after eating two salads for lunches realised the next day that my dressing had sugar in. So this weekend I made my own mayonnaise.

As I said i'm going to try it, this tinder lark doesn't work when you look fat in all the pictures. I blame shallow women.
