I'm just hoping they might not let him back in, or at least lock him up for 14 days if they do.

Take back control of our borders, limit immigration. Points based system, only those who will contribute, highly skilled workers... Get it down to the tens of thousands...

Today...

Except for 3 million Hong Kong residents...

Actions speak louder than words though. Cruise ships aren't doing a whole lot right now. Maybe a hire them to create a sea bridge to Hong Kong, just line them up at the port, and fill them up with those seeking asylum.

I wouldn't class what's happening in Hong Kong as economic migration...

Whereas those Syrians, Afghans, Libyans and so on who got corralled at Calais were economic migrants?

The hong kong problem could be resolved tomorrow by those opposed to communism by getting up and buying an empty island in the South china Sea, moving there and then being the biggest capitalists in Asia within a decade

China's put military bases on all the empty islands in the South China sea. It's like they'd already thought of this idea.

Well, in theory, that would be yes if you ascribe to the concept of the first country of asylum principle enshrined in Article 26 of the Asylum Protocol Directive.

The problem is that France and Belgium haven't transposed that article into national law whilst Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany,Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain and the UK have.

That makes it complicated, especially when France is almost generally not the first country these refugees reach on their long arduous journey.

I don't have a blanket answer for you though other than to acknowledge that all immigration laws are flawed and not universally agreed...

**edit** and no I don't agree that we should stop immigration and repatriate anyone already here - just to be clear...

I don't know who is behind the parody Mark Francois twitter account (@MarkFrancois12 - well worth a follow) but it's some sort of comedy genius and can't just be a civilian. Anyway, he has a long-running Samuel Pepys style diary and this brilliant clip below is an animated snippet

It's not often I refer to local news here, but this one's so close to home and so indicative of the impact on the local area that was so flippantly dismissed as 'fearmongering' pre & post-Brexit.

In the absence of any local councils having public consultations regarding large-scale HGV clearance facilities coming out in favour of the plans (most recent being Stanford), the government has simply side-stepped everyone at the local level and purchased a large patch of land near a brand new motorway junction to be used as a freight clearance facility, and work is due to start within the week. Here's another link about the same story that came out as the story broke. So unexpected was the announcement that notifications had to be delivered by hand to nearby residents.

There's several points to this which aren't sitting comfortably with the locals. Firstly it means nearly every single truck entering the country will be using this facility (there's capacity at Dover but not enough), but mainly because it levies a retro-active suspicious eye at the reasoning behind the go-ahead for Junction 10a of the M20.

Any local knows that for years the combination of poorly-times traffic lights on the existing J10, and a poor traffic-management system at a nearby business park's exit onto the junction's approach road has contributed greatly to the horrendous congestion at the junction on a daily basis. For years we've been begging the local council to both improve the business park's exit junction, a traffic accident hotspot, and to turn off the traffic lights on J10, as the junction never works as well as when the traffic lights stop working.

Naturally, we were ignored, because people in offices that have never used our roads have their models they work from. Then suddenly, Junction 10a was approved. It wasn't a popular decision, as most locals couldn't see how spreading the traffic to another junction less than a third of a miles from the existing one would cause so much as a dent in the current traffic volumes, especially as they decided to close the coast-bounds slips of the old junction.

And then, so seal the lid on the jar of ignorance & incompetence, they decided to put traffic lights on the new junction as well. I've sat at red lights for 2 minutes on many occasions with nothing coming though the other way.

Anyway, after all the dust settles, and the finishing touches are being put on the new surrounding roads, we get this announcement, the ramifications of which means all claims of traffic alleviation were either subterfuge, or downright lies. Things like this really don't 'just happen', and as the nod for J10a came from Kent Highways, who'll be looking after the freight as it comes in, it's easy to jump to some convenient conclusions as to why the nod was given at all.

Bloody hell! Brexit was a thing once, wasn’t it? Oh, it still is, and the Tories continue to f*** it up in spectacular and imaginative ways.

Screw the end of the year, now we walk away in October if there isn’t a deal. Turns out that the oven ready deal Boris was promising isn’t and never was. Big surprise.

And the new news... Screw the withdrawal agreement as well, and screw the Northern Ireland peace agreement in the process. But on the bright side Covid cases are up by 3000 yesterday, so by the time this rolls around, we’ll all be too sick and dead to care.
