Deathnell for Flash sounds loudly

Firefox starts blocking Flash by default due to security concerns:

Though if Adobe get their act together they might undo the block.

Facebook chief says it's time to kill Flash:

Quote:
In tweets posted over the weekend, Alex Stamos, who joined the social networking giant from Yahoo last week, said the popular web plugin used for videos and games had to go.

"It is time for Adobe to announce the end-of-life date for Flash and to ask the browsers to set killbits on the same day," he said in one tweet. He followed up in another tweet, adding: "Even if 18 months from now, one set date is the only way to disentangle the dependencies and upgrade the whole ecosystem at once."

I'd love it if Chrome followed Firefox and blocked Flash, that would give a well needed kick up advertisers backsides (pretty much the main Flash content on the web now) to stop using out-dated unneeded technology to deliver CPU thrashing content at people.

Wondered what the hell that was all about. I'm constantly getting blocked placeholders with an 'outdated' warning. Was beginning to wonder if my system was on its way out

For those of us still using XP that's effectively the end of Firefox.
Flags up that Flash needs updating then you can't update as your OP system is outdated.
I've been using Chrome for anything that needs any kind of video for a while.

Would this be the reason that Vines haven't played on Twitter/Firefox for some months now. Certainly well before any of this went public?

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

Maybe just a temporary issue, HTML5 video players are becoming the norm these days.

“We lost sight of our social and ethical responsibility to provide a safe, usable experience for anyone and everyone wanting to consume the content of their choice,” he writes.

I'm sure they have social and ethical responsibilities all of a sudden and it isn't the fear they are going to make less money because their old business model of shoving unwanted ads down people's throats at the expense of site speeds and user experiences is failing.

In the past they've just not cared about any harm they did to your site viewing figures, if you are anything but gigantic they'd just do what they wanted to shove ads in your users faces, and when the users start leaving in droves, you end up needing to put more ads on to survive making things even worse.

No big deal for them, because your users are going somewhere else which they also serve ads on.

The problem now is they spend their time on sites which don't serve ads at all, which is what the ad networks are really worried about.

And it gets worse.

Their last update left a gaping hole in your defences so wide the only way to completely protect yourself is to completely uninstall Flash altogether

Part of my role at work is keeping Flash, Java etc up to date, via SCCM. Feels like a day doesn't go past without one of those needing updating., at least they are easy MSI installs.

I hate all these adware tracking cookies that build up all the time, and need to be removed using anti-spyware. I am sure it slows the chrome browser down. Am I right in that?

I get at least 100 a week and have to clear them out.
