RE: [VIDEO] Facebook's new track-you-anywhere privacy policy

I do think it's worth noting the difference between Google and Apple's business models. Both want you to be part of their eco system, that's for sure, Apple want you to buy only Apple products.

But it's in Apple's interests to protect your privacy, because they aren't in the advertising game and they don't make money from your data. Google on the other hand, that's their primary business model, targetting you with ads. And Microsoft has been going the same route with Windows 10.

So if Apple are tracking you, it's to improve the service you get from them, if Google do it, it's a way to get data on you that is useful to them.

Someone is finally trying to make Facebook reveal what info it has on people it's tracked who don't have Facebook accounts:
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/08/24/irish_data_protection_commish_opens_inquiry_on_facebook_data_transparency/

Quote:
Facebook's refusal to hand over the data it holds on users' web activity is to be probed by the Irish Data Protection Commissioner after a complaint from a UK-based academic.

Under the General Data Protection Regulation, which came into force on 25 May, people can demand that organisations hand over the data they hold on them.

Facebook lets advertisers target you, specifically you:
https://gizmodo.com/facebook-is-giving-advertisers-access-to-your-shadow-co-1828476051

Quote:
They found that when a user gives Facebook a phone number for two-factor authentication or in order to receive alerts about new log-ins to a user’s account, that phone number became targetable by an advertiser within a couple of weeks.

...

Quote:
The researchers also found that if User A, whom we’ll call Anna, shares her contacts with Facebook, including a previously unknown phone number for User B, whom we’ll call Ben, advertisers will be able to target Ben with an ad using that phone number, which I call “shadow contact information,” about a month later.

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/09/28/facebook_accounts_hacked_bug/

Quote:
In effect, every single Facebook user account was wide open to being hacked, although the Silicon Valley goliath estimated that "only" 50 million accounts were, in the words of a spokesperson, "directly affected." A further 40 million had their accounts "looked up." It has patched the hole, and logged out 90 million users to invalidate their access tokens. Facebook staff said it appears no posts were made on users' behalf by the hackers, and that no credit card information was taken. "We will update you as we know more," a representative told us.

Wonderful.

TL;DR, despite pretending it cares about protecting your data, Facebook doesn't. Nobody is shocked.

Pew reports that three-quarters (74%) of Facebook users surveyed in the study did not know that Facebook tracks their interests and various personal traits so they can be more efficiently targeted with ads. Those users only discovered this when the researchers directed them to take a look at the Facebook ad preferences page for their accounts.

Most (51%) of Facebook users in the study told Pew they felt uncomfortable about Facebook compiling this personal information.

Maybe should be rewritten as 74% of Facebook users have been living under a rock for the last few years.

I thought everyone knew this by now.
