I do think it's worth noting the difference between Google and Apple's business models. Both want you to be part of their eco system, that's for sure, Apple want you to buy only Apple products.
But it's in Apple's interests to protect your privacy, because they aren't in the advertising game and they don't make money from your data. Google on the other hand, that's their primary business model, targetting you with ads. And Microsoft has been going the same route with Windows 10.
So if Apple are tracking you, it's to improve the service you get from them, if Google do it, it's a way to get data on you that is useful to them.

Under the General Data Protection Regulation, which came into force on 25 May, people can demand that organisations hand over the data they hold on them.

Those users only discovered this when the researchers directed them to take a look at the Facebook ad preferences page for their accounts.
Most (51%) of Facebook users in the study told Pew they felt uncomfortable about Facebook compiling this personal information. Maybe should be rewritten as 74% of Facebook users have been living under a rock for the last few years.
