Ticket booking fees declared too expensive by Which?

Who'd have thought it:

My mum took my dad to see Dame Edna a few weeks ago, the booking fee was £20!!!

Quote:
Ticketmaster, which is the world's biggest ticketing company, explains how fees are calculated on its website, saying the costs are "agreed in consultation with our client" - usually the concert promoter.

Fees contribute to "retail and distribution costs" and the technology that underpins its systems.

The company says print-at-home tickets incur a fee as the company has to provide "access control systems to check the tickets" at venues.

Because a bar-code on an e-ticket is completely different from a bar-code on a printed ticket. And everyone knows sending an email costs way more than a stamp.

I went to see Stewart Lee in October and he made a point of mentioning that the reason he didn't tour last year was that there were no venues that didn't charge an exorbitant booking fee. The Colston Hall wasn't bad (might even have been free of booking fees, my memory is terrible).

Booking fees for me are on the same WTF list as fuel being sold at XXX.9 pence per litre.

The Joiners (small infamous pub venue here, has had some massive bands play there before anyone knew who they were) just posted this

I heard rumour that Ticketmaster were toying with the idea of adjusting prices to demand! The sort of bands I like now don't play Wembley, and at £100 a time I wouldn't go if they did. ( I think when I saw GNR there on the use your illusions tours, it's was something like £30 including coach!)

edit: wow maybe I was being optimistic with 100

Wish more artists would do what Radiohead did once, and force the ticket holder to be present on entry, but allow them to sell the tickets back if they couldn't go.

I know they are moving towards ticketing apps now, so no mobile no entry, but I imagine that still requires artists to agree to it.

related, a while ago Pavement posted about venue taking a massive cut of merch sales,

then saw this last night:

Quote:
Right, tomorrow we'll be doing a pop shop from 5pm to midnight at The Social on Merrion Street in Leeds along side our Academy show. All merch at the shop will be approx 25% cheaper than it will be at the gig due to the Academy taking a 25% cut of all merch sold in their venue.

one of the reasons merch prices has gone up so much! (still doesn't justify NIN charging £60 for reissue t-shirts, when bands like PWEI are apologizing for prices going up to £22 for ethically sourced shirts!)

I've seen a few more bands moaning about venues taking a big cut of merch, some even now going as far as to say no merch will be sold in the o2 owned/run venues! (I guess they hope these days the fans will buy the tour t-shirts online)

Also, saw that Robert Smith from the Cure the other day tweeting about how he tried to keep prices down for tickets, but I guess he couldn't stop ticketmaster for then adding on more and more for handling fees.....or could he?

Ticketmaster has offered a partial refund to fans who bought tickets to see The Cure's upcoming US tour.

The company came under fire earlier this week, when it emerged that, in some cases, the fees added up to more than the face value of the ticket.

The Cure's frontman Robert Smith said he was "sickened" by the "debacle" and promised fans answers.

Quote:
One customer who bought four $20 (£16.54) tickets ended up paying $172,10 (£142), after service fees, a facility charge and an order processing fee were added.

Another, who wanted to see the band in Phoenix, Arizona, paid $72.25 (£59.75) for a ticket with the face value of $20 (£16.54).

dunno, it's good he stepped in, but the actual price of tickets is pretty cheap, I guess a $20 ticket is in the gods of a megadome, so you probably need opera glasses to see the screen, let alone dots on stage, "cheap" stadium tickets here started at £60 for them!
