At the same time, if Rantzen only heard rumours, that`s not enough to destroy someones life with is it? Obviously now she can safely say she heard rumours, but considering the damage this sort of thing does, I don`t blame her for not saying anything before.
Hearing rumours is completely different to `knowing`, so if it was just rumours then I would agree 100%.

What is the UK law regard accusations to a dead man.

Can victims if proven, get compensation money back off a dead man`s relatives or who ever got his assets?

Think Si hit the nail right on the head there but how can a supposed champion for Childrens` rights come out with this sort of statement now?

It does go to show (IMHO) that everyone really does have a price....(well, everyone in showbiz)

My Dad always told us he was a paedophile, and wouldn`t let us watch Jim`ll fix it.  We never believed him!

I think Esther Rantzen should have reported him.  You are never going to have enough proof to report someone for something like that, but if you have heard enough rumours and have a gut feeling so much that 30 or 40 years down the line you stil feel guilty, then surely it would have been more than just a couple of rumours?  If everyone waited til they had concrete proof about abuse, it would never get reported, it`s not like they`re going to do bad things in front of you.  You have to report these things as soon as you strongly suspect them to stop it from happening IMO.

Freddie Starr Groped My Hamster!

I think it`s open season on seventies and eighties personalities. This is only going to muddy the issues.

Just to throw something out there, if the allegations are true, saville wasn`t a paedophile, he was an Ephebophile. Not much difference, a crime has still been committed.

With the revelations of Liz Kershaw and Sandi Toksvig now coming to light, it seems that fame came way before morality and lefality back in the day. Saville was The person to look up to, so when anyone made waves about all the groping, shoulders were shrugged and backs were turned. It was a different time, indiscretions were routinely swept under the carpet, but there hasn`t been a sudden paradigm shift in the time since jimmy`s death. Female empowerment has been going on for years, so to wait until now to suddenly come forward with all these `secrets`, just reeks of money-grabbing and attention seeking, so it`s putting a lurid sheen on things. Not that there wasn`t already one there

it seems that within the Beeb all the DJs of the time were at it, John PEEL his first wife was 15 when they got married! (both she and her parents lied about her age!)

I wouldn`t be surprised if a few more names get thrown into the mix... i dont believe its anything as sinister as a paedophile ring, but i believe the youngsters invited to Top Of The Pops in the early days were from Banardos and the like so already vulnerable, and for those involved it was probably the accepted norm, to have young girls and boys around them! (doesnt make it right...)

The "casting couch" has existed as long as people have performed for the entertainment of others and there have been gullible young women (and men) wanting to break into Showbiz.  That doesn`t make it right.

Jimmy Savile is being tarred with the paedophile brush when, as Pete says, he was an ephebophile (chaser of jailbait).  That doesn`t make it right either.

I worry that there`s a kind of hysteria being whipped up by the press (presumably so they can talk about public interest and moral highground when Leveson`s finished).  It looks as if it`s turning into something of a witch-hunt which cannot in the long run be good.

I may be wrong here but I was under the impression the term "paedophile" was a person who engaged in sexual interests with a minor under the legal age of consent?
If that`s so then the next question would be, did you watch the documentary in question?

Two of the claimants have openly said they were 15 when the sexual relationship started.
The "casting couch" analogy here I don`t buy Mark as there are apparently independant but very similar accounts of groping and sitting on knees etc. whilst a hand slipped somewhere but not for resulting fame or fortune/place in a movie etc.
There were as mentioned visits to a kids` home where the children were vulnerable and one woman openly and matter of factly sat describing what she did and was expected to do and in here mind she was paying for the nice man to take them for their day out.

I don`t know where watching it leaves me, it did have a fair bit of damning evidence to it but again, all one sided.
I thought as many of the still pictures they had and could show were of the bulging eyes presenter to make him look more evil than not, but there are a fair few things that leave you wondering... his taped interview regarding comments on Glitter are ridiculous.

When I started to hear the claims and the rumours weeks ago I thought it was just the hype machine building to ensure a good audience and viewing figure. Whilst I`m not convinced it wasn`t partly that I`m also not convinced this is a move to claim any form of compo or fame (especially as a couple of the claimants asked for anonymity during the programme)

The 60s-80s was a very different place, certainly sexual harassment in the workplace was common as muck, and tolerated. Far too many stories now coming out about Saville for there not to be some truth in them.

But I can understand if a lot of celebrities knew about him but didn`t say anything, because the culture would have meant and end to their job and nothing would have come of it as people closed ranks. Then afterwards you can`t really say anything because then it`s fear of getting sued without any evidence, and maybe he was then at an age where he`d ceased to be a menace.

It probably just took one person to break the silence, then everyone would come out and say things like has happened now. Quite amazing it took this long and his death though.

Hopefully we live in an age now where that sort of thing comes out sooner rather than later. But I`m sure there are still plenty of bosses who care more about bad PR than the morality of it.
