What`s a good brand of fridge freezer these days?

Jitendar Canth (Reviewer) posted this on Saturday, 22nd October 2011, 14:20

Our old one looks to be on the way out. At least I can hear the compressor/condensor thingy working two rooms away with the door closed. A subsonic pulsing vibration, and it doesn`t seem  to have as much `quiet time` as it used to, alternating between a hum and the vibration.

Anyway, it`s an LG that we bought almost ten years ago, and it`s worked like a dream since the day we bought it. Age is probably catching up to it now. Brand loyalty and all that, I thought I`d look at another LG, but checking the reviews online show that the company mostly produces unreliable junk now, the complaints are many!

So what`s a good company for fridge freezers in 2011?

It`s not for a fire insurance scam, so don`t mention Beko!

we bought a Bosch fridge freezer 7 or 8 years ago, still going strong. Bosch are usually recommended for white goods.

Ve`ve got ze Bosch

Have you tried dusting around yours and make sure its radiator gets a circulation of air?

I know `built in` and lack of air is supposed to be bad news for fridges/freezers.

I know you said don`t mention Beko, but we`ve had ours ever since we moved in nearly 7 years ago and it`s never failed us. They were very swift in tracking us down to offer a free repair, sadly not that swift, as I`d already arranged it 2 weeks previously

Gave it a good vacuuming today, although it`s probably too late for the preventative maintenance. It`s two inches away from the back wall, and not in a recess, so it gets good air. Turned out Google is a charm, as I found this post that describes my problem exactly, albeit without the refrigeration failure...

It`ll be fifty quid for the part, a couple of hundred for the engineer, so I`m better off buying a new appliance, especially after nine years.

The vibration is a bastard. I thought I was suffering from Bristol Hum, sitting in my lounge feeling this low frequency pulse in my stomach. I`ve been blaming the neighbours for months, except yesterday, when everything was silent, I decide to track it down. It turns out to be the fridge. There`s some weird interference effect too, there are little pockets of vibration on the house, step away by a couple of feet and you don`t hear anything, right in the middle it`s bloody annoying. Where I usually sit to watch the TV two rooms away turned into the vibration sweet spot. Finally fixed that by moving the fridge one centimetre further away from the wall. Now the sweet spot is in the hallway. I feel like I`m living in a physics experiment!

Samsung seem pretty good, we bought a big american jobbie when we moved into the new house 18 moths ago, and its been absolutely brilliant... (filter cartridges are expensive direct, but cheap enough on fleabay!)

Samsung were always very good in the American style market when I was in store.
LG have always been hit and miss, at one point very very good then drifted off, you probably got yours in the "very good" period.

Point 1: Can`t you fit the part yourself and omit the engineer? From the looks of it that`s just a clip in or screw in module with a couple of spade connectors on it.

Point 2: And this is a very old engineer`s trick if it doesn`t have a physical fault is to turn the appliance upside down overnight, then turn it right side up and leave at least 12 hours for the compressor gasses to settle before powering up again.
It usually only works for compressor issues but I`ve known a few people to try it and it worked for various noises.... I`m not recommending it in any way though, but if yer gonna chuck it and buy a new one it might be worth a chance just before it goes bye bye.

One I would personally avoid under any circumstances and would never ever purchase is a Hoover or Candy branded or manufactured model.

If it was a PC, I`d be happy mucking around with the innards, but this not so much, and I`m only guessing from Google that is the problem, it might be something different, like a mouse in the works...

I`m tempted to try this just for the sake of trying it. At the moment, I`m 90% decided on getting a new appliance. The current plan is to eat our way through the contents of the freezer before starting shopping. After all, 10 years is pretty good service for a fridge. We had a series of fridge freezers before it, one was a Tricity, I think another might have been a Hotpoint, and after 2 to 3 years, they would all go bang.

No Hoover and Candy, got it. Actually that Hotpoint might have been a Candy...

Nope, mighta been a Creda but no chance it was a Candy as Hotpoint/Creda were same units, Hoover/Candy were their brands.
Hotpoint made various appliances for others though, Bosch dishwashers and IIRC they did make a couple of Bosch refrigeration appliances.

Regarding the upside down trick... if you decide 100% you`re going for the new one it`s a nothing to lose option, and even if it only works for a few extra days until you decide on your preferred new model it`s a bonus :D

You`re getting into dangerous territory now Jimbo. Do I smell a repeat of the Great White Goods Debate of 2011?
