Buying a Freesat box question..

Paris (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 20th August 2009, 12:07

Can anyone just walk off the street and buy a Freesat box in the UK... or do you have to prove you are a UK resident?? Have seen a box called Sat4Free (in Ireland) but seems the epg is not as good as the uk freesat version...

You just buy one. I think they will ask for address because of Licence Fee.

Can you get C5 on this because my old Sky sat box with no subscription that I use wants a viewing card to watch it and also the same goes for some other channels that are free on freeview including Sky news... :/

Yeah, I`m pretty sure the freesat boxes get those channels. With Sky it`s the difference between Free to Air and Free to View channels.

When the Sky card runs out it becomes a Freesat card, so you should get Channel 5. Sky news doesn`t need a card at all. Your card may just need updating, if it can`t get ch 5. If so just put it onto Sky News & leave it for a couple of days. If you can`t get Sky news, either your receiver or LNB is faulty.

I assumed from his post that he doesn`t have a card but I may be wrong.

Your probably right, but sometimes people say that, when there card has run out, they then assume they don`t have a card. However the Sky News is available without a card & the non scrambled Channel 5 is available. I don`t think it is on the Sky EPG but you can get it via add channels. Of course a cheap FreeSat box will get you the lot without the Sky EPG, but with the Freesat EPG, & so will a £30-00 basic satellite receiver, no Freesat EPG but just add the channels in order, BBC1/2 ITV etc.

Hi guys, yes I have a sky card (no subs version).. but didn`t realise that I could continue to use it in a freesat box. Thats good news. I am getting a freesat HD box as I want to move away from my SD sky box.. and don`t want to go to the hassle of getting a new sky box and a card to marry to it..
