CBT moterbike info needed....

gonna do my cbt test in a few weeks, as i won`t be able to run a car anymore :( so i was hoping someone could give me an idea of what to expect cost wise. & also exactly what i`ll be able to ride, i have experience on bikes as i used to have dirt bikes when i was younger..

hoping to get a 125, but i`m unsure if i can ride that on a cbt ? if not i guess i`ll be stuck on a 49cc bike ?

if anyone has any idea what the cost of insurence would be on both 49cc & 125cc bikes, bearing in mind i`ll be classed as a new rider.

If you have a full car licence, you automatically have provisional entitlement to ride a 125cc bike for two years on L-plates.
That`s once you pass the CBT of course.

Not sure about the cost of the CBT and/or insurance.
To many variables with the latter, especially.

cheers bowf, i`ve applied for the forms to either add motercycle onto my driving liscence, or to simply apply for a moped lisence.

might be easier to just get the moped lisence, as once the cbt is done i caan still ride a 125cc with learner plates (if i read it correctly)

But if you go for a moped licence, doesn`t that mean you have to pass the CBT on a moped?
Which means you buying or hiring a moped.
Whereas if you go for the provisional motorcycle licence, you can then take your CBT on the same 125cc you intend to ride afterwards??

if i add motercycle to my provy driving license i still gotta do the cbt before i can ride anyway, & as i`m not even sure where my driving licence is (& cannot get into the house where it`s at anyway) the fastest & easiest route seems to be to just get the moped licence, then do the cbt (£100 inc the hire of the bike for the test) this should let me ride upto a 125 untill i`m 70yrs old (used to be valid for 2 years, but they changed that to 70yr age)

but.... i`m assuming i read the details correctly, & me being me, i probably didn`t read it right... gonna call at a local bike shop on the way home tonight & see what the best route is...

Your thinking/reading appears sound to me. ;)
Not sure I`d bother asking a bike shop, they`re often as clueless as the rest of us. :/
I`d probably just ask whoever you intend to do the training with.
Dare say they`d clarify the `minefield` over the phone, prior to making a booking.
I would definitely avoid sticking with a 50cc any longer than the CBT though.
They`re lethal things, stupidly restricted to 35mph in the UK, when they can do double that in most other countries.
A 125cc at least keeps up with most traffic.
If it`s purely for commuting and image isn`t important, you need a Honda CG125.
This is a cheap one on ebay.
You will note this has a drum front brake.
If you can afford it, go for one with a disc instead (later model).

just to clarify the 49 to 125cc thing..

if your full driving licence was issued prior to sept (iirc) 2001, then you can
ride a 49cc scoot/ped without the need to take a CBT.

anything over 49cc upto a 125cc requires a CBT to be taken every 2 years.

average cost of a CBT these days is £95.

insurance is reasonably cheap... me and the missus are insured on our 49cc scoot
3rd party fire and theft for £82 per year. tax is £15 per year.

That`s not what the rules say.

A provisional motorcycle licence (Group A) can be held from 17 years old.
Those issued before 1st Feb 2001 were time limited to 2 yrs. from date of issue; whilst those issued from 1st Feb 2001 are valid to age 70.


I don`t see anything about having to retest every two years. :/

does the 2 year thing only apply to those riding (after a CBT) on a full car licence?

just that when i did my CBT during 2004 i was told by the test house that i would have
to renew my CBT every two years unless i passed a motorcycle test?

It`s intensely confusing, it really is. :/
It would appear that although your provisional m/bike entitlement stays with you until 70 years old, you do have to resit your CBT every two years.
That`s unless you pass an `A1` or `A` licence test.
An `A1` licence entitles you to ride a 125cc forever, without L-plates and is designed with commuters in mind.
If you want to go bigger, you need an `A` licence.

Jesus, I`m so glad I passed my bike test in 1984..... :/
