Replica watches - would you?

bowfer (Elite) posted this on Monday, 13th October 2008, 08:49

There`s a particular watch I like which, at around GBP7600.00, I cannot hope to afford in the forseeable future. :(
Yet I`ve easily found several internet sites offering `apparently` good replicas for around USD200.00.
Now, I`m having a bit of an internal struggle with this.

1/ I avoid knock-off DVD`s and clothes like the plague, because I don`t consider the savings made to be enough to warrant the reduced quality. Why buy a knock-off DVD for £4 when you can get the real thing in Asda for £8?
Why buy a fake shirt for £15,when you can get the real one for £80?
Given that there is no way in hell I can afford the real thing in this instance though, I cannot help thinking "where`s the harm". :/

2/ Is around £100 (depending on R/E) too much for a replica anyway????

Personally no I wouldn`t, but then again I haven`t worn a watch in years, due to the abundance of timekeeping equipment on PC`s, PDA`s, & phones.

Probably not a lot of help.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

When fishermen catch dolphin-friendly tuna, how do they know which tuna are being friendly to dolphins?

Funny you should mention that, because I never seem to remember these other sources are available when I need them. :/
So on the odd occasion I forget to don a watch, I feel `lost`.

If I had 200 bucks to spend on a watch, I get a good watch worth 200 dollars in it`s own right, not a fake of a more expensive one.

It`s a fair point, but there`s every indication the replica is a perfectly good watch in its own right.
Let`s face it, the principal is the same.
Whether you`re buying a replica for £100 or a `proper` watch for the same amount, you`re buying a watch that has been built for £30 `wherever`.
The actual workings are all, pretty much, the same.
I already have several proper watches by Seiko, Tissot and Nautica.

You`re right about that.

I guess it all comes down to how much you want to look like you`ve got a very expensive watch. It`d be a bummer if you got mugged for a replica...

I went to Thailand and was asked to buy someone a replica Rolex, one with the kinetic winding. Apparenty Rolex have a factory out there and a lot of the watches are made in the factory out of hours, at least thats what he told me. When it wasnt running backwards or just stopping for no apparent reason it was a reasonable watch.

You are, of course, quite right.
I wouldn`t, for example, pay £100.00 for a replica of a real watch priced at, say £1500.00.
To me, that is cheapskating, as the £1500.00 watch is reasonably attainable to me.
It would take a few of months sacrifice, but it`s attainable.
As I said though, the watch I`m interested in is around £8000.
Even if I could afford that, all 3500 are pre-sold.
So I`m finding myself `moving the goalposts` a bit. :/

With regard to the mugging aspect, I had a bona-fide lottery winner at my wedding.
Spent £70k on a private numberplate and £25k on a diamond encrusted Rolex.
Here he was, fast asleep (drunk) in the lobby of our hotel, with his watch hand in the air.
Even if he had woken up to feel someone robbing it, he wouldn`t have been able to stop them. :D

Chance you take, for sure.
I`ve seen replicas Rolex die within a day, some run for years.

I purchased 4 watches in Thailand (rolex - Omega and cant remember what else), never wore one of them. I always wear my original Brietling. The $200 watches are exactly the same as the $50 ones in Thailand. All made in China and running off battery. Its just that your buying them off a web outlet who have more outgoings etc than a street peddler.

I was planning on wearing them for when I dont mind damaging them, ie DIY etc.

BTW I need to get rid of mine as there taking shelf space ;-)
