CIS Motor insurance - rip-off cancellation charge ??

David HX6 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 10th August 2007, 09:54

I`ve just cancelled my policy with CIS Motor Insurance. They had been okay with their premiums since 2004. In February of this year, when I renewed, I had a letter saying they could no longer just allow `any driver` to be included. So to include my 18 year old son as a named driver, the premium went up to £106 per month - fair enough, I thought.

Now my son has got his own car, I gave them the opportunity to quote for a new policy, but they were totally uncompetitive - in excess of £3000. (I`ve since found a much better deal).

So I rang to cancel my current policy, as I also found a better deal for my wife and me. I expected a cancellation / amendment charge of between £12.50 and £20, according to the literature I had (which wasn`t clear). I even thought I may get a refund of the balance of the month I had already paid for.

A letter arrived this morning with a demand for £159.73 !!

Needless to say, I rang and complained and was given a long-winded explanation of how the charge was calculated. The guy also said I would have received these details when I renewed, but I `m certain I didn`t. I have a booklet with lots of `small print` but I can`t find any reference to the calculation of `their` cancellation charges.

I told him I had just cancelled my direct debit, but he told me I could send a cheque !!

Are they just trying it on because I cancelled? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First time I`ve come across this.
Any time I`ve cancelled a policy, they`ve refunded me.
Sometimes a small admin fee, sometimes not.

CIS are now operating a named driver also earns no claims scheme. The change for named driver like your son allowing any driver stopped last year when we renewed for my son. They have always been at the forefront of cheapness for us, especially now he`s over 21. Premium almost halved, which on a Group 11 makes a HUGE difference.

Hope you can get it sorted.
