Is This Right Or Is This a AOL Scam

Perth192 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 15th March 2006, 11:32

Hi.

My 12 months AOL contract ends today.

I have just spoken to a AOL employee to see if all is ok, and to make sure they
do not take a further payment from my bank account.

I was told by this AOL employee yes my contract ends today, but they still taking
a further payment so that means this will be 13 months and not 12 months.

Is this right, or are they trying it on?

Generally, things like this require you to opt out, rather than opt in.

I.E after 12 months, if AOL dont hear from you, they assume you still want the service and carry on billing you. This added to the fact that you generally have to give 30 days notice on things like this and youve got another month to pay. Plus some reading of the terms and conditions the next time you sign up to anything..........

So, in summary, AOL are quite within their rights to do this. Just because you didnt read the fine print, doesnt mean its a scam.

Hi.

I spoke to a AOL employee over a month ago, and i was told i had to contact them
again today. so i did try and give a months notice.

Have you tried to explain, and get a normal answer from a AOL employee,
or she kept saying is yes my contract ends today, but they still taking a further payment as i`m still one day under contract, but i can cancel my AOL contract tomorrow

That can lead to its own problems. Namely them (through no fault of your own) being put on a bad debters lists. Its appaling how easily big companies can have your name put on, but there you go.

Your best bet is to ring up, speak and ask to speak to the persons manager. Get their name and, if possible, employee number so you have a record of the conversation and state that you rang over a month ago and expect this matter to be resolved and the refund to be in your bank the next day.

Its unlikely to happen, but I beleive AOL do get things sorted eventually.
